Ajax full-back Sergino Dest opens up about the interest shown by Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich decided to sign a full-back in January as they wanted a player in the right-back position. Hansi Flick publicly insisted that the club needs to invest in defense and attack to do well in all competitions.

Rekordmeister fulfilled Flick’s request by signing Alvaro Odriozola from Real Madrid on a six-month loan deal. The Spanish full-back’s move has not materialized the way he would have expected till now as Flick handed him only one start in February.

It is unlikely that Odriozola joins the club permanently in summer. Since Joshua Kimmich has done exceptionally well in the holding midfield position, Die Roten will like to add a right-back to the squad that can compete with Benjamin Pavard.

After the closure of the winter transfer window, Ajax full-back Sergino Dest was heavily linked with a move to Bavaria. The Dutch club had reportedly turned down a bid for Dest in January. Speaking to Ajax life (via Football Orange), Dest confirmed the interest from the defending German champions but dismissed suggestions that he was at Allianz Arena to finalize a transfer.

"“I now know nothing more about that than there was indeed interest.”“That’s right, against Hoffenheim. But I was there mainly because I have family living there.  It was not the case that I was there at the invitation of Bayern, as was suggested. There was nothing else behind it.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Die Roten reportedly had a bid in the region of €25 million rejected for Dest. They will have to up their offer in summer if they want to sign the teenage full-back. Ajax are in a strong position to get a big fee for Dest as his current deal is set to expire in 2022. ( via Transfermarkt)

Dest is enjoying a breakthrough season with Ajax. The teenager has racked up 20 appearances for the Dutch club across all competition. He can also occasionally fill in the left-back position if needed. The USA international is a raw talent and still needs to polish the rough edges of his game to become a top player.

If Dest wants to play every game, then he should stay at Ajax. However, a move to a big club such as Bayern will not arrive every summer. His playing time will not be sacrificed to a great extent in Munich, but the teenager will have to share playing time with Pavard at Bayern.

The growth of Alphonso Davies should be encouraging signs for all the young players that Die Roten plans to sign. The German club eased him into the first team and he is now one of their best performers this season. Dest will also have that opportunity if Rekordmeister decides to go forward with this transfer and he gives green light to this move.
