Bayern Munich needs Kingsley Coman to start fulfilling his potential by delivering consistent performance.

Things started going in Bayern’s way against Chelsea in the second half of the first leg of their round of 16 clashes. The visitors were dominating the English side with ease, scoring two goals at the start of the second half. Bayern Munich were ruthless as they showed no signs of slowing down, creating chance after chance.

However, the biggest blow Die Roten received in the game was not in terms of goal, but an injury. At the hour mark, Kingsley Coman was down at the touchline, holding his hamstring. This has been a regular sight for Bayern fans as Coman has been unfortunate with injuries in the past few seasons. Coman’s injury turned out to be a minor setback later as Robert Lewandowski suffered an even bigger injury against Chelsea.

The French winger is set to be back in action next week as Die Roten said nothing to be worried about this injury. Coman started training with the first team this week, but Hansi Flick is unlikely to take a risk him against Augsburg later today.

Coman has been unfortunate with injuries, which has hampered his progression as a player. He was contemplating his future at the club, but Bayern showed faith in him and signed him permanently from Juventus.

More from Bayern Strikes

On the pitch, Coman still has a long way to repay the faith shown by the club. He has been struggling to find the right sort of consistency in his performances. The French winger goes from being a mind-blowing winger to a frustrating winger in the same game. He shows great quality when he is getting past players with ease, only to undo all the good work by playing a poor pass in the final third.

Coman has 10 goals and assists to his name across all competitions this season. The output in the Bundesliga is much poor, scoring two goals in 15 appearances. His best season in a Bayern shirt yielded six goals in the Bundesliga during the 2018/19 campaign when he made 21 appearances in the competition. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt)

The French winger admitted that he wants to take more responsibility at Die Roten this season after departures of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. Things have not gone his way this year, but he still has time to make a big impact on Die Roten’s season by delivering goods in the final phase of the season.

Stats do show that Coman’s output is way below the level of a top-class winger, but he does help in stretching the defenses by providing width. Apart from him, only Perisic is able to bring this aspect on the table for Die Roten. The Frenchman’s trickery and dribbling help in unsettling teams that sit deep against Bayern.

Going forward, this aspect of his game alone will not help him to become one of the best wingers in the game. If Bayern manages to sign Leroy Sane from Manchester City in summer, then they will have a wide player that can do all things Coman does plus good productivity in the final third. Coman still has time on his side to fulfill his potential, but he needs to start delivering goods to keep his place in the starting lineup next season.
