Bayern Munich has reportedly opened discussions with Alphonso Davies regarding a contract extension.
The defending German champions are peaking at the right time of the season. Bayern Munich are currently cruising in the Bundesliga, and they are firmly placed to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Last night they booked a place in the semi-finals of DFB Pokal by clinching a narrow 1-0 win over Schalke.
Almost every player has played a key role behind this resurgence of form under Hansi Flick. However, Alphonso Davies deserves special praise as he has seamlessly adapted to the left-back role this campaign.
The 19-year-old forward is almost undroppable now due to his consistent performances in the full-back position. Davies received a lot of praise for his performance against Chelsea last week as he set up the goal for Robert Lewandowski that helped Die Roten to complete a 3-0 mauling of London based club.
Bayern wants to make sure that Davies remains in Bavaria for a long time. According to SportBild (via Bulinews), Die Roten have started negotiations for a new deal for the Canadian winger. The new deal is likely to last till 2025, and Davies will likely get a considerable rise in his wages.

Die Roten had to fend off interest from numerous clubs to sign Davies from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018. The German club broke the transfer record for an MLS player to sign Davies that summer. Both clubs reached an agreement, but Davies joined the club in the winter window of 2019.
Davies had a slow start to his career in Munich. He played few games for the first team under Niko Kovac during the 2018/19 season, but he got the majority of playing time with the reserves team. The Canadian winger similarly started the 2019/20 season, but an injury crisis in defense forced Kovac to field Davies in the left-back position.
Davies has not looked back since this positional switch. Even after Kovac’s departure, Flick continued to play him in the back four. His lightning pace helped him to make recovery tackles with ease. With regular playing time, he has improved his positioning, which has helped him to become an even better defender.
In the final third, Davies was erratic at the start of the season. After gaining the trust of the manager and regular minutes on the pitch, he has significantly improved in the attack. He is linking up well with the winger and delivering dangerous crosses in the box every game. Die Roten is doing the right thing by extending the contract as Davies is going to get even better with time.
