Bayern Munich star frustrated with stalemate against RB Leipzig
Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara speaks about the team’s deficiencies after Sunday’s goalless draw against RB Leipzig.
It was an exciting battle at Allianz Arena on Saturday as Bundesliga’s both teams played out an intense 0-0 draw. After this result, Bayern Munich remained at the top of the table, maintaining a slender one-point lead over RB Leipzig.
Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann were tactically astute during the game, fielding the right tactics and making changes at the right time in the game. The two teams also showed great character when they were getting dominated in the game.
Both sides had opportunities to seal three points, but couldn’t finish those chances. Bayern Munich were bailed out as Timo Werner missed a chance from close range, while Leon Goretzka‘s powerful attempt was saved by Peter Gulasci in the final quarter of the game.
Die Roten have been ruthless in Ruckrunde, scoring goals for fun. The draw against RB Leipzig halts their momentum, so players were disappointed. Speaking to media after the game (via Goal), Thiago Alcantara admitted that the defending champions were not good enough against Leipzig.
"“We didn’t play the game that we had to play. We were playing at home and we have to win all of the games which we play here.”“We played very well in the first half but then we let it go and didn’t control the game. It’s not about attack or defense, it’s about the team and it’s a team game. The energy was not enough to be dominant in the game, we were not in our best mood in the game, that’s why we didn’t enjoy it.”"

Apart from two big mistakes at the back, Bayern were solid defensively against RB Leipzig. They held the defensive line to reduce space for Leipzig attackers when they were trying to score on the break. The two full-backs ventured well in the final third and delivered some dangerous crosses in the box.
The midfield department slightly underperformed, but Thiago continued his good form. The Spaniard was gliding on the pitch, getting past the players for fun, and almost opened the scoring in the fifth minute. However, there was not a sustained control in the midfield as Leipzig counter-pressed all three Die Roten midfielders.
The forwards were most disappointing against Leipzig. They were kept quiet by Leipzig’s resolute defense throughout the 90 minutes. Robert Lewandowski found it difficult to make darting runs in the box. He was given very little space to turn and linkup with other forwards.
This point against Leipzig can prove to be critical for Bayern in the title race. The performance was not great, but there were some positive signs in this pulsating draw. Rekordmeister needs to make sure that they once again stitch a long winning run from next matchday to be in driver’s seat for the title.
