Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller could play for Germany in summer
Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller could represent Germany in the 2020 Olympics.
Thomas Muller endured a tough 2018/19 campaign in terms of representing Germany at the international stage. Bayern Munich forward had an underwhelming World Cup in 2018, where Germany exited the competition at the group stage.
After the World Cup, Muller played few friendlies, and then, Joachim Low decided that he is set to focus on giving chances to young players. Along with Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels, Muller was no longer going to be considered for selection.
Muller was devastated by this announcement but gracefully accepted it. The three senior players are yet to get a proper farewell in German colours, considering their contribution over the years, including the World Cup triumph in 2014.
You can say never in football as Muller may get the opportunity to once again don the German jersey. Muller has been included in the list of 50 players that have been submitted to the National Doping Agency ahead of the summer Olympics. Germany’s U21 manager Stefan Kuntz told DFB’s website that Mats Hummels and Muller would be considered for the selection of the final squad.
"“That’s understandable, football fans expect the biggest names to be in the squad – several candidates have been named lately, such as Maxi Arnold, Davie Selke, Maxi Eggestein, Sandro Wagner and Max Kruse, whose names have all been sent to NADA among others.”“Thomas Müller and Mats Hummels for example are also registered at NADA thanks to their involvement with the senior national team.”"

Joachim Low also had previously hinted that Muller is likely to be on the Olympics list for Germany. In the final squad, every team is allowed to have three players over the age of 23. Muller and Hummels will need permission from their clubs for playing this tournament. Olympics is set to begin after Euros in summer, so Muller will miss the start of the 2020/21 season.
I don’t think there will be any pressure from them to not allow Muller to participate in this tournament, provided Bayern strengthens their attack significantly in summer. Participation of Muller will also improve the chances of Germany to finish on the podium in the prestigious competition.
Muller has always been a player that has put the team’s demands over everything else, so he will surely relish the opportunity to represent Germany at the international. Apart from his quality on the pitch, young players will also get a proper leader to look up to in such a big tournament.
Despite his possible participation in the Olympics, I hope DFB arranges a proper farewell match for Boateng, Hummels, and Muller. The decision to focus on youth was right, but the implementation of this decision could have been much smoother. Winning a gold medal in summer will add one more feather to Muller’s hat and Bayern fans cannot be any more excited to see this happen.
