Bayern Munich is reportedly eyeing a move for Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier.

The winter market has reached the halfway stage, and Bayern Munich is yet to do any significant business. Like every January window in the past few seasons, they have concluded the signing of a player that will join the club in summer. Schalke’s Alexander Nubel is the player this time around that has agreed a summer move to Bavaria.

In the outfield departments, defense is the area where Bayern is reportedly exploring options in the market. Hansi Flick also publicly admitted that he would like to add a defender and forward to the squad. Hasan Salihamidzic responded to his public admission by saying that the club is looking at various options.

Bayern is reportedly looking to add a right-back to the squad so that Joshua Kimmich permanently moves to midfield, and Benjamin Pavard plays in central defense. There are many defensive options in the market that can solve these issues. The latest suggestion is that Bayern could go shopping in Ligue 1 to address their defensive deficiencies.

According to SportBild, Paris Saint-Germain’s Thomas Meunier has emerged as a defensive target for Bayern Munich. The Belgian full-back can be an option for both summer and winter markets as he has only six months left on his current deal at the French club.

More from Bayern Strikes

Meunier is an attacking full-back that has a very good eye for passes and crosses in the final third. His robust stature also makes him very dominant in aerial duels. The lack of blistering pace is the only weakness in Meunier’s game. He has struggled to get regular playing time this season, so a move away from PSG would benefit all the parties.

PSG may prefer to listen to offers for Meunier in January rather than losing him for nothing in summer. Considering Euros are on the horizon, Meunier will also like to get minutes under his belt to be ready for the tournament in summer.

Signing Meunier will make a lot of sense for Bayern. He will provide the right impetus in the final third, which Die Roten lacks when Kimmich is not playing there. The Belgian is not young but still has few years left in the prime of his career. Moreover, the transfer fee will not be huge for Die Roten, making it a very feasible and clever transfer move.

The report from SportBild also confirms that Jerome Boateng will not be leaving the club this month. Boateng was reportedly attracting interest from AC Milan and Arsenal, but the club doesn’t want to lose a player in defense at the moment. The German champions will do well to add more depth by signing Meunier in the next two weeks.
