Oliver Kahn wants Bayern Munich to be more successful in terms of promoting young players from the academy.

Bayern Munich started 2020 by welcoming Oliver Kahn to the club’s board. The former German goalkeeper is set to play a vital role in the club’s decision making over the next couple of years. He will eventually replace Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as the club’s CEO in 2022.

Kahn held a press conference earlier this week and outlined the things he would like to see at Bayern. He was also present at Die Roten’s training camp in Doha and interacted with the first team players and Hansi Flick.

The former Bayern goalkeeper has been vocal in the media about things related to Bayern. He will now have the opportunity to shape the present and future of the club by making some vital decisions. He already insisted that Bayern need to appoint a manager that can win trophies and implement an attractive style of football.

On the players’ front, Kahn wants to see more players from the academy to play in the first team. Speaking to the club’s magazine (via Sky Sports), Kahn admitted that Bayern must continue to make youth players as key members of the first team.

"“Talent training is an absolute top issue, not only for FC Bayern but for German football in general.  We want and have to get players from our own academy and make them top professionals.”“Players like David Alaba, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and of course Thomas Müller have shaped and stand for epochs at FC Bayern for this club.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Kahn is spot on about stressing the importance of promoting young players from the academy. Die Roten’s last major success in Europe was powered by numerous players that came through the club’s youth system. Along with buying top players in the transfer market, youth players are also needed to compliment them.

Bayern have struggled to integrate youth players into the first team over the past few seasons. The German club needs to lay down a new plan for young players to become important members of the first team. They can do it by giving young players more minutes in the cup games, even if it meant that they have to sacrifice the domestic cup.

Apart from giving minutes to young players in cup competitions, Rekordmeister needs to sort out their loan system. A cooperation with a decent European club will help youth players to get first-team minutes, and help them to maintain a steady pace in their development. Adrian Fein has been a fine example of a player thriving during a loan spell and earning a chance to impress in the first team next year.

Flick has done a fine job of promoting young players to the first-team training and give them opportunities in meaningful games. Joshua Zirkzee has impressed under him, and Bayern will hope other young players also make the most of the chances they will get in the second half of the season. Kahn has the right idea about youth setup at Bayern, but it will be interesting to see what measures he takes to execute this idea.
