Bayern Munich defender reportedly offered to Italian giants
AC Milan has reportedly rejected the opportunity to sign Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng.
After the recent comments from Hansi Flick and Hasan Salihamidzic regarding transfers, the next few weeks could be busy for Bayern Munich. The German champions have more than one area in the current squad that needs to be addressed.
Apart from making additions to the squad, Die Roten also has some players in the squad that can leave the club before the end of January. Jerome Boateng is one of the players that doesn’t have a long term future at Bayern.
According to Calciomercato, Boateng has been offered to AC Milan this month. The Italian club is in the market for a defender. This report also claims that Milan’s response has been negative after Boateng was offered to them due to his high wages. It remains to be seen whether Boateng will reduce his wage demands to join Milan.
Boateng tried to force a move away from Bayern in 2018. The German defender had agreed terms with Paris Saint-Germain, but the two clubs couldn’t reach an agreement over the transfer fee. Manchester United also tried to sign him that summer, but he reportedly rejected a move back to England.

Die Roten spent heavily last summer to bolster their defense. The arrival of Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez meant that Boateng fell further behind in the pecking order. It looked certain that he will leave, but Mats Hummels‘ departure and lack of offers meant that he had to stay in Bavaria for one more season.
Boateng has looked a shadow of a player that he used to be in the past few seasons. He has struggled with injuries, and his strengths as a defender have plummetted over the last few years. He is unlikely to get a new contract extension at Bavaria, so a move away from the club will benefit him to get his mojo back to a certain extent.
Meanwhile, Bayern should also look to offload Boateng in this window. His current contract is set to expire in 2021, so this window is the last opportunity where they can demand a sizeable fee for him. It will be interesting to see if Boateng decides to reduce his wages to facilitate a transfer. The German media reported in December that his entourage had held talks with Bayern regarding a winter move.
Bayern has handled Boateng’s departure clumsily. A player who has played a huge role in the club’s success should have been allowed to leave on good terms. All the parties will benefit if a solution to this extended transfer saga comes to fruition this month.
