Right-back

If Bayern decides against moving for a central defender in January, then right-back should be the area in defense they need to seek improvement. Bayern currently has two right-backs that are needed in different positions.

Pavard has consistently featured in Die Roten’s lineup this season. The French defender has been used as a right-back while David Alaba has partnered with Martinez or Boateng in central defense for the past two months. Pavard is a good full-back, but his ideal position remains central defense. He is solid defensively but struggles to provide the cutting edge in the final third.

More from Bayern Strikes

Joshua Kimmich meanwhile has been the key man for Bayern in central midfield. The German provides a great balance to the starting lineup when deployed in the number six position. His brilliant passing range is rightly being used in this role. It doesn’t come across as a huge shock that he wants to permanently move in midfield.

To play Pavard and Kimmich in their best positions, Bayern will have to look for a solid right-back. Joao Cancelo and Benjamin Henrichs are the names being mentioned in the reports across Germany. One of these players will bring attacking impetus and also help Hansi Flick to field a balanced starting XI every game.
