Defenders

David Alaba — 9/10

Some might see this as being a little too high of a rating, but for me, David Alaba has been the most underrated player in Bayern’s squad this season. Always a model of consistency for Die Roten, Alaba has proven just how vital he is, being able to go from left-back to center back seamlessly. Bayern needs him to keep up his form if they are to make a serious push in Europe and win the League.

Jerome Boateng  3/10

Let’s be frank. Jerome Boateng has been abysmal this season. His lack of pace has caused Bayern’s backline several issues, and it is clear that he needs to move on, either in the winter window or the summer. He is getting game time is due to injuries to the players above him in the pecking order. Let’s hope his form improves, or else Bayern’s season could not have the outcome they want.

Alphonso Davies — 8/10

Alphonso Davies has been a revelation for Bayern this season, and his performances have warranted high praise from players and fans. His durability and defensive stability have been invaluable this season as it has allowed David Alaba to move inside without a drop in production. Davies has one goal and four assists to his name in all competitions and proven a real threat on the wing with his pace and crosses.

Lucas Hernandez — 5/10

This might seem a low rating for Hernandez, but there are a few reasons this is a low score. For one, Hernandez is the record signing of Bayern by a wide margin, and so far, has not lived up to that price tag. The best ability is availability, and for the past couple of months, Hernandez has been out with injury. Also, when he has been on the field, Hernandez hasn’t offered anything on the scoresheet and was part of a backline that leaked goals every match. Let’s hope Hernandez comes back healthy and starts delivering good, or else this season has been a bust for him.

Javi Martinez — 3/10

At the beginning of the season, fans were critical of Niko Kovac for leaving Martinez out of the lineup due to the player’s reputation and love for the club. At the winter break, it is easy to understand why he was left out when all players were available for selection. His lack of pace is troubling, and he doesn’t have the quickness to close down fast players. Like Jerome Boateng, it is time to move on from the treble-winning defender, and Martinez needs to be sold either in the winter or summer.

More from Bayern Strikes

Benjamin Pavard — 7/10

Benjamin Pavard has been a great buy from Stuttgart and will be a Bayern defender for a long time. He has provided stability all along the defensive line at both center back and right back. His drawbacks this season include his crossing abilities or lack thereof, and occasionally he switches off mentally, allowing a forward to get in behind him. Pavard has some deficiencies, but he has a bright future and has shown his quality for Die Roten so far this season.

Niklas Sule — 5/10

Niklas Sule gets the same grade as Hernandez for the same reasons. The best ability is availability, and Sule is out with a knee injury for the rest of the season. And even when he was playing, his performances left much to be desired as he would mentally switch off occasionally, which often led to the conceding cheap goals. His performances from last season did not carry over and that was disappointing. Hopefully, he takes his time rehabbing and comes back 100 percent for the next season.
