Lothar Matthaus urges Schalke star to join Bayern Munich in January
Lothar Matthaus urges Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel to join Bayern Munich in January.
Bayern Munich has dismissed suggestions that the club will be actively pursuing transfers in January. The German club is aware of the fact that clubs don’t want to sell their top players at the halfway stage of the season.
However, the reports in Germany have suggested that Die Roten may start laying the groundwork for the summer transfer window. The defending champions are expected to agree terms with Schalke’s Alexander Nubel in January.
Schalke announced last week that Nubel is not going to sign a contract extension at the club. The German goalkeeper will be available on a free transfer in summer. Bayern seems to have won the race for his signature as numerous top European clubs were keeping an eye on him.
There have been mixed reactions to this expected transfer due to the presence of Manuel Neuer at the club. Lothar Matthaus was also surprised by reports suggesting Nubel moving to Bavaria. In his column in Sky Sports, Matthaus insisted that Nubel should try to join Bayern in January after burning bridges at Schalke with his decision.
"“Nübel has no future at Schalke. He’s already banned for the next few games, Schubert is a good substitute and David Wagner can’t afford to have a whistling concert against his own captain at every game and risk the team’s performance.”“The best thing for Nübel and everyone involved would be to move to Munich in winter.”"

There were doubts about Neuer’s future at Bayern in summer as his agent insisted that German champions are no more an elite club in Europe. Neuer squashed these rumours by insisting that he is hungry to achieve success at Bayern, despite being on a steady decline in the past few seasons.
Bayern wanted to hand Neuer a new deal. The talks have been fruitful as German media reported at the start of December that the German international is close to extending his contract. Keeping all these things in mind, there have been doubts raised in Germany about Nubel’s move to Bavaria.
Die Roten will have to keep two goalkeepers happy next season. Nubel needs playing time at this stage of his career, so sitting on the bench in Bayern will halt his progress. He will surely learn a lot from Neuer in Bavaria, but playing regularly is essential for young players. Bayern will have to give cup minutes to Nubel while Neuer starts in goal during the Bundesliga games.
Nubel’s arrival will also affect the future of other goalkeepers at Bayern. Sven Ulreich will have to look for a move in summer as he will become a third-choice goalkeeper at the club. Christian Fruchtl will have to look for a loan move to get the first-team action next season. Nubel has made a bold decision, so it will be interesting to see how he copes up with limited game time this season after rejecting all the ideal conditions for his development at Schalke.
