Bayern Munich have secured the future of Adrian Fein by extending his contract by two years.

The last few weeks have been very good for the youth academy at Bayern Munich. Hansi Flick has involved younger players in the first team and gave debuts to three players in the final weeks before the winter break. Joshua Zirkzee has grabbed these opportunities with both hands and scored two winning goals for the first team against Freiburg and Wolfsburg.

Apart from these players, Adrian Fein is also progressing well at Hamburger SV. The young German midfielder is on loan at the second division side. He has established himself as the key player for Hamburg in the past four-five months.

The 20-year-old midfielder has made 17 appearances for Hamburg in the first half of the season. Bayern has been pleased with Fein’s progress. Earlier this week, a report in Germany suggested that Die Roten will include Fein in next season’s senior squad.

There was surely some truth in this report as Bayern announce a contract extension for Fein on Friday. The German midfielder’s deal was extended by two years, so his new contract will expire in 2023. In a statement released by the club, Fein insisted that time at Hamburg is pivotal for him to progress at Bayern.

"“I was born in Munich, I spent many years of my youth at FC Bayern, so I’m very happy I could extend my contract.”“The time at Hamburger SV is very important for me. I can gain match practice and make progress.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Fein will be a welcome addition to Bayern’s squad are not many natural defensive midfielders in the first team. Javi Martinez and Joshua Kimmich are the only suitable options for this role. The former is expected to leave Bavaria in summer as Die Roten looks to continue the process of improving the average age of the squad.

Bayern needs to build a proper pathway for the youth players to get chances in the first team. The German club has struggled to integrate young players in the squad for the past few seasons. Moreover, the failure to get the best out of someone like Renato Sanches has also hurt Die Roten’s reputation of improving young players.

Obviously, Die Roten is not the sole reason to be blamed for Sanches’ and other youth players’ struggle at the club. However, they need to come with a strong plan to ease the integration of younger players in the first team.

A good loan system will be a step in the right direction for the young players to develop properly. Fein’s success at Hamburg is a fine example of how loan spells can help in improving young players. It is great to see Bayern has rewarded him with a new deal, but the club needs to make sure that he gets decent game time next season to take the next step in his development.
