Should Bayern Munich allow Jerome Boateng to leave in January?
Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng is reportedly eager to leave the club in the upcoming winter transfer window.
There was an exodus at Bayern Munich last summer as numerous senior players left the club. Jerome Boateng was also expected to leave last summer, but the German eventually ended up staying at the club.
The German defender’s future at Bayern looks bleak. According to SZ (via Spox), Boateng’s agent has already met Hasan Salihamidzic to talk about a potential transfer. This report insists that the German defender wants to leave Bavaria in the winter transfer window. Meanwhile, TZ reporter Manuel Bonko insists that Bayern will not allow any player to leave in winter.
Boateng was close to joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2018. He had agreed to personal terms with the French club, but eventually, the transfer fell apart. There was a possibility of a move to Juventus in August this year, but all parties couldn’t reach an agreement.
Die Roten were ready to offload Boateng last summer, but Mats Hummels‘ departure to Borussia Dortmund possibly ended Boateng’s chances of leaving Bayern. He performed well during the pre-season tour but remained further down the pecking order behind Lucas Hernandez, Niklas Sule, and Benjamin Pavard in central defense.

Boateng’s contract at Bayern is set to expire in 2021. Die Roten should not stand in his way if a good offer arrives for Boateng arrives in January. There is an injury crisis in central defense, but Rekordmeister should not stand in Boateng’s way if a good offer arrives next month.
The German defender has been on a steady decline for some time. His performances this season have shown that teams have started targetting him and exploit his lack of pace. It will be beneficial for all parties if Boateng leaves Bayern. He will get more playing time at another club and may rediscover his good form.
Having said that, Bayern will have to be proactive in the transfer window to find a replacement for Boateng in January. Hernandez will be fit after the winter break, but Niklas Sule is expected to be back next season. The Bundesliga champions will need to add a center-back in January to improve the depth of the squad.
Die Roten have been heavily linked with Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez in the past couple of months. The Spaniard could turn out to be a good replacement for Boateng. Bayern has been ruthless in the past 12 months regarding squad development, so they should not be against the idea of offloading Boateng midway through the season.
