Bayern Munich should try to sign Alexander Nubel in January
Bayern Munich should try to sign Alexander Nubel in January despite being close to agreeing to a new contract with Manuel Neuer.
There were massive changes in the Bayern Munich squad to start building a younger squad. Die Roten released senior players to make room for new signings and give more responsibility to younger players such as Kingsley Coman.
Manuel Neuer looks set to play a key role in this process of building a new squad. According to Sport1, Bayern is close to reaching an agreement with Neuer for a new contract. The new contract will make sure that Neuer stays in Bavaria at least till 2023.
This report suggests that Neuer wants to remain number one at Bayern for a considerable amount of time. Neuer struggled with injury a couple of seasons ago, but he is back to his best this season. The German goalkeeper remains hungry to achieve success with club and country.
Sport1 also believes that Neuer’s contract renewal is likely to end the chances of Alexander Nubel joining Bayern. Nubel has been heavily linked with a move to Bavaria and touted as Neuer’s successor. His contract at Schalke is set to expire in summer, making him free to talk to other clubs in January.

Despite Neuer’s contract renewal, Bayern should still try to convince Nubel to join the club in summer. Die Roten have taken too long to find proper replacements for Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, so it will be better that they start nurturing Neuer’s replacement from now.
The question arises now, how Bayern can give Nubel the required game time to continue his development. Die Roten need to approach this transfer the way did in case of Serge Gnabry, three years. The German club signed Gnabry from Werder Bremen and allowed him to immediately go on loan to Hoffenheim for a season. Gnabry improved during the loan spell and came back to Bayern as an even better player.
Just like Gnabry, Nubel could be sent on a two-year loan spell to a good European or domestic club. By the end of such type of loan spell, he will be in a better situation to dislodge Neuer as Bayern’s main man in the goal.
Die Roten have not been proactive in terms of squad development in the second half of the decade. It is difficult to replace top players such as Neuer, so it is necessary to start the process before such players enter the twilight of their careers. The contract renewal of Neuer is good news for Bayern in the short-term, but the club needs to start making long term plans in the goalkeeping department.
