Robert Lewandowski opens up about the most competitive defender he has come up against while playing for Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich has endured a mixed campaign till now. The German champions are four points off the top of the table and won their every cup game till now. Despite inconsistent performances from the team this campaign, Robert Lewandowski has been the most prolific striker in Europe.

The Polish striker has scored in every Bundesliga and Champions League game he has started this season. He has already managed to hit 22 goals in 17 games across all competitions. If the Pole continues to maintain this form, then he will end up with more than 50 goals this season.

Lewandowski has been the talisman for Bayern in the attack for the past five seasons. Apart from his season in Bavaria, he has managed to score at least 40 goals every year. His consistency over the past four seasons surely makes him one of the best transfers in Die Roten’s history.

The Polish striker has been playing against top defenders throughout his career. However, his toughest competitor has been a player whom he has faced rarely. In an interview with Goal, Lewandowski revealed that he loves playing against Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.

"“The toughest opponent? There are plenty of good defenders, but it has always been great to have duels against Sergio Ramos.”“I was always happy to be able to compete with him.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Lewandowski got the better of Ramos when he was playing for Borussia Dortmund. However, he didn’t enjoy good fortune when he came up against the Spaniard in a Bayern shirt. Die Roten have been knocked out in the Champions League by Real Madrid during 2016/17 and 2017/18 campaigns.

The Pole could have played with Ramos if Bayern had sanctioned his departure last summer. Real Madrid were reportedly interested in Lewandowski. The striker was also agitating for a transfer away from the club. Moreover, Lewandowski also revealed that Ramos had previously urged him to move to the Spanish club.

One can say never in football, but Lewandowski is unlikely to leave Bavaria anytime soon. The Poland international is completely settled in Munich and recently penned down a contract extension that will keep him at the club for at least four more years.

Lewandowski has won numerous trophies with Bayern, but Champions League trophy has alluded him till now. The Pole will have to continue his prolific form to stand a chance to win this trophy this season. He will have to make sure that he doesn’t lose another duel against Ramos this season. However, his teammates also need to step up to bring the European trophy back to Allianz Arena.
