Hansi Flick is the right fit for Bayern Munich, says Lothar Matthaus
Former Bayern Munich defender Lothar Matthaus backs Hansi Flicks to manage the first team till the end of the season.
Bayern Munich rounded off a challenging weekend with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund. The defending champions climbed one place in the league, sitting third in the table, one point behind Borussia Monchengladbach.
The players were expected to respond strongly this week after suffering a heavy defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt in the last gameweek. Along with the result, the departure of Niko Kovac further increased the pressure on them.
Hansi Flick was given the job to prepare the team against Olympiakos and Dortmund. The performance against Olympiakos was a subdued one, but the Bavarians turned up the screw in the Der Klassiker. This emphatic win against their bitter rivals provides them the platform to go on a long run before the winter break.
Flick is being tipped to manage the team till the end of this season. In an interview with Kicker (via Bundesliga.com), Lothar Matthaus backed Flick to keep this role ahead of other interim options. However, Matthaus believes that Die Roten will hire a bigger name in summer.
"“We played together at Bayern between 1985 and 1988 and I definitely know he’s good enough.”“He’s very clear about how he does things and has good communication, both with the starters and those on the bench. As a long-term solution but I think that Bayern will get a big name.”"

Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge hinted after the win against Dortmund that Flick is likely to continue in this position till the end of this season. Arsene Wenger was heavily linked with the interim role this week, but Bayern reportedly decided against appointing the French manager.
The defending German champions are expected to go all out for Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag in summer. His work with Ajax has been impressive as the Dutch team reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season. Since then, he has been heavily linked with a move to Bayern despite Kovac’s double win.
Ten Hag is reportedly interested in managing Bayern, but he is not keen on joining the club midway through the season. Hence, Bayern will have to look for an interim option at the moment. Wenger would have been the perfect option, but the Frenchman reportedly wants a permanent role.
The sample size is too small to judge Flick’s work as Bayern manager. However, he has the experience of handling star players, so it will not be an outrageous decision to give him the reigns till May. The club chiefs are set to decide on the new manager in the next two weeks. Flick has surely strengthened his case with the smashing win against Dortmund.
