Bayern Munich reportedly ponder a move for Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Nunez
Bayern Munich is reportedly looking at Atheltic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez after an injury crisis strikes the defensive department.
The injury curse has struck Bayern Munich once again. It has been a disastrous last few days on the injury front for Die Roten as Niklas Sule, and Lucas Hernandez suffered serious injuries. The center-back area is now thin on numbers due to these injuries.
Sule is set to be out for six months after he ruptured anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee against Augsburg last weekend. Hernandez meanwhile will be out for more than two months due to an ankle injury he suffered on Tuesday.
Bayern had ruled out signing a center-back after Sule’s injury. However, the stance from Die Roten has changed after Hernandez was ruled out for two months. The German champions are now reportedly pondering a move for center-back in the winter transfer market.
According to Spox, Bayern is monitoring Athletic Bilbao center-back Unai Nunez. This report suggests that Die Roten has been monitoring Nunez for a while. Giovani Branchini, who works closely with Bayern on numerous deals, has made contact with Spanish defender’s entourage.

Nunez came through the academy at Bilbao. His impressive performances at the youth level helped him to become the first choice center-back for the first team in the last two seasons. Nunez was also part of Spain’s U-21 side that clinched the Euros title last summer. Bayern will have to activate his €30 million release clause (via Marca) as Bilbao don’t negotiate transfer fees.
The Spaniard will be a good addition to Die Roten’s squad. He will effectively become the replacement of Jerome Boateng, who is likely to leave next summer. This transfer could turn out to be a bargain as the market for central defenders is inflated at the moment.
Die Roten is working to refresh their squad by adding young players. They have other areas to address before the defense, but chances of completing other deals are more realistic in summer. The arrival of Nunez will make sure that Bayern has sorted their backline for next five years.
Bayern meanwhile can survive till January with the available defensive options. They currently have Boateng, Benjamin Pavard, and Lukas Mai as the center-back options. Javi Martinez can also play in this position, but he will be needed in midfield as Joshua Kimmich moves back into the right-back position. David Alaba can also be deployed in this role by moving Alphonso Davies in the left-back position.
