Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman speaks up about the role of injury struggles in helping him to become a more mature player.

There have been numerous changes in the attacking department at Bayern Munich this summer. Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery left the club while Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic arrived on loan deals to replace them.

Bayern also hope that Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry become more consistent and establish themselves in the starting eleven. Coman particularly is expected to step up this year as he enters his fourth season in Bavaria.

Coman has enjoyed success with Die Roten in the past three years. However, his contribution to the team’s cause has been limited due to persistent injuries. The French winger has spent long spells on the treatment table across the three seasons due to serious injuries.

Speaking to France Football this week, Coman opened up about the impact of these injuries. The French winger admitted that injuries took a toll on him, but he is much more matured player right now. He also insisted that his hunger for the game is still intact despite these constant setbacks.

"“Physically, I feel a little slower than before. I can not repeat the efforts until 18-19 years old. So, at that level, I’m not especially stronger.”“But technically, tactically and professionally, yes. In my head, too. The stages of life, the wounds, the maturity, made me stronger inside. Growing up, we see life differently. I am still young and I have a lot of energy to give. I still love soccer and I’m always hungry.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Coman has started the season strongly by grabbing three goals and three assists across all competitions. The Frenchman is enjoying added responsibility at Bayern after the departures of Robben and Ribery.

The former Juventus winger missed out on the World Cup squad last season due to injury. He suffered a season-ending injury in February last year. Coman is confident that he can contribute to the French team’s success in the next few years by being a team player instead of focusing on becoming a star player.

Earlier this month, Coman delivered brilliant performances for France. He managed to find the back of the net in both the games. The 23-year-old forward needs to maintain consistency for Bayern to feature regularly for France as competition in the attacking department is intense.  He will attain this consistency if he manages to stay away from injuries. Bayern will be desperate to see Coman play a complete season without a serious injury.

Meanwhile, David Alaba has taken great strides towards returning to the first-team action. The Austrian full-back started training with the team on Wednesday. Niko Kovac is optimistic that he will be back for the game against Tottenham Hotspurs next week but the game against Paderborn this weekend will be too early for the left-back.
