Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirms that Bayern Munich will soon offer a new contract to Manuel Neuer.

Bayern Munich is trying to rebuild another world-class squad after releasing numerous senior players in summer. Die Roten decided to splurge cash on some of the best talents in Europe to replace these senior players.

Apart from signing top talents, Bayern is also looking to secure the long term future of some of their star players. The Bundesliga champions extended the contract of Robert Lewandowski last month to make sure that he spends the rest of the years of his prime in Bavaria.

Manuel Neuer’s long term future is also a matter of concern for Bayern. The German goalkeeper has two years left on his current deal. His agent remained coy about his future at Bavaria during an interview in summer.

However, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge played down the speculation over Neuer’s future on Wednesday. Speaking to Sky Sport, the club chief confirmed that Neuer is likely to pen down a new contract sooner rather than later.

"“We have a beyond 2020 contract and I think that we extend this contract in the not too distant future again.”“We are grateful that he plays for Bayern Munich, we know the quality and we feel that gratitude.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Neuer will be 34 by the end of this season, but the German is still hungry to achieve success for club and country. After struggling with a couple of serious foot injuries in 2016 and 2017, Neuer is now completely fit. He is not at his best, but he remains one of the best goalkeepers in Europe.

The German international showed his quality last weekend against RB Leipzig. He made numerous difficult saves to keep Die Roten in the game. He is on the decline right now, but still has the quality to play at the top level for two years. Bayern needs to be careful regarding a new long term contract and start looking for his long term replacement.

Alexander Nubel has been reportedly identified as the long term replacement for Neuer. The German goalkeeper has been delivering impressive performances for Schalke in the past couple of years. This transfer could turn out to be easy to execute as Nubel’s current contract expires next summer. However, Neuer’s presence might block this move as Jens Lehmann recently pointed out that Nubel needs to get regular first-team action at this stage of his career.

Apart from Neuer’s contract situation Rummenigge also addressed the recent quotes from Marc- Andre ter Stegen about goalkeeping situation in the national team. He believes that DFB needs to clear the situation and should show gratitude towards Neuer’s contribution for Germany.
