Niko Kovac brings back the idea of team council at Bayern Munich as he reveals the players that will be the leaders in the dressing room.

The dressing room at Bayern Munich lost a wealth of experience this summer. Rafinha, Arjen Robben, and Franck Ribery were released this summer. These three players played a pivotal role in Die Roten’s tremendous success in this decade.

Apart from releasing these three senior players, the Bundesliga champions also sanctioned the transfer of Mats Hummels to Borussia Dortmund. The German defender was an important player for Niko Kovac last season. However, the arrivals of Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard forced the German defender to leave for playing regularly this season.

After a summer of major upheaval, Kovac decides to appoint a team council in the dressing room at Bayern. Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, and Robert Lewandowski are already part of this council as they are the three captains for this season.

The Croatian manager also includes Thiago Alcantara, Joshua Kimmich and David Alaba into this group. Speaking to SportBild, Kovac explains the reason behind adding Thiago, Kimmich, and Alaba to this council.

"“Thiago is an absolute leader on and off the pitch. Thiago also stands for the Spanish-speaking faction.”“David Alaba has been involved for a long time and has worked his way up to this role. Joshua Kimmich also represents the younger generation.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Thiago has become the main man in midfield under Kovac. The Spaniard has been consistent under the Croatian in the past 12 months. His performances have been mixed this season as he struggled in the number six role against Borussia Dortmund in DFL Super cup. However, there is no doubt that Thiago will be an important player for the Bundesliga champions this season.

On the other hand, Joshua Kimmich has been a tremendous player for Bayern in the past few seasons. The German is currently one of the best full-backs in Europe. His role on the pitch might change this year as Kovac likes to use him in the midfield. Apart from being a top player, Kimmich also has all the traits to be the future captain of Die Roten.

David Alaba has enjoyed a good career at Bayern Munich since coming through the youth academy of the club. Alaba will continue to be a key player for Die Roten in the next few seasons as he is still in the prime of his career.

The idea of a council will help in maintaining a good atmosphere in the dressing room. Kovac has played a blinder here by keeping all the senior players happy by giving them an extra bit of responsibility. Moreover, the distribution of leadership will make things easy when he is heavily rotating the starting line up.
