Jerome Boateng set to stay at Bayern Munich this season
Jerome Boateng is set to stay at Bayern Munich after a proposed move to Juventus broke down.
It is going to be a quiet deadline day at Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga champions are content with their business, so there is unlikely to be any new arrival at the club today. There was a possibility of Jerome Boateng’s departure, but the player is set to stay at the club at least till the winter transfer window.
Juventus showed interest in signing Boateng on Sunday due to the serious injury to Georgio Chellini. However, the latest reports from Sky Sports and SportBild suggest that the talks have stalled between all the parties. Goal’s Juventus correspondent Romeo Agresti also confirms that Juventus has ended their interest in Boateng.
The German defender was not present at the club’s photoshoot for Paulaner on Sunday. All the three parties were involved in negotiations to complete this transfer on Sudnay, but couldn’t reach an agreement. Eventually, Boateng decided to stay in Bavaria for one more season.
Boateng’s future at the club has been uncertain due to the arrivals of new central defenders. Even before the arrivals of Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard, Boateng was already third choice center back under Niko Kovac. He has gone down in pecking order right now and become the fourth center-back option in the squad.

The German defender was relatively calm about his future at Bayern this summer. Boateng is ready to fight for his place in the starting eleven. He was close to joining Paris Saint-Germain last summer, but the move eventually didn’t materialize. Boateng also rejected a late move to Manchester United last summer as he was not keen on returning to England.
This summer Bayern were more keen on offloading Boateng. Uli Hoeness publicly advised him to look for a new club this summer to avoid the frustration regarding gametime this season. The club had reportedly decreased the asking price for the German defender.
Boateng has been on the bench in two of the three Bundesliga games this season. He will have to rely on DFB Pokal games or injury crisis in central defense to get considerable minutes on the pitch. Kovac’s team selection in the last two games confirms that Lucas Hernandez and Niklas Sule is his first choice center-back pairing.
This summer was the ideal time for Boateng to end his illustrious career at Bayern. He has been a vital player for Die Roten since arriving from Manchester City in 2011. However, his steady decline in the last two years has contributed to less gametime in Bavaria. He might have to look for a transfer away from Bayern in January as his chances of feature for Die Roten are looking slim.
