Lucas Hernandez wants to win numerous trophies with Bayern Munich after making his Bundesliga debut against Schalke.

Bayern Munich clinched their first win of the new Bundesliga campaign after delivering a dominating performance against Schalke on Saturday. The defending champions remain two points behind Borussia Dortmund as they dropped points against Hertha Berlin in the first gameweek.

Lucas Hernandez played a pivotal role in Die Roten’s convincing victory against Schalke. Hernandez replaced Benjamin Pavard in the heart of the defense. The latter was moved to right-back position as Joshua Kimmich replaced injured Thiago Alcantara in center of the park.

The Frenchman looked solid in the heart of the defense, helping Manuel Neuer to grab his first clean sheet of the season. Hernandez showed his composure in defense throughout the game as Schalke forwards rarely got a sniff on Die Roten’s goal.

Hernandez is set to be Die Roten’s first choice center-back this season. Speaking to TZ, Hernandez admitted that he wants to win trophies with Bayern this season. The French international also admitted that Bayern is one of the top five clubs in Europe.

"“You do not have to be here long to understand the dimensions of this club. You get the hunger for success from day one and that’s exactly what I’m pursuing. I want to win everything with Bayern, that’s why I came here.”“The season has just started, I know, but hopefully, we can be in the competition until the very end.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Bayern smashed their transfer record to sign Hernandez from Atletico Madrid in March. The German club tried to sign him in the winter transfer market. Atletico had no intention to sell their key player midway through the season, though.

Hernandez suffered a serious injury after the winter market, which eventually allowed Die Roten to complete the transfer before the end of last season. The 23-year-old defender continued his rehabilitation throughout the summer to be ready for the new season. He eventually came off the bench against Energie Cottbus in DFB Pokal couple of weeks ago.

The Frenchman will be expected to tighten Die Roten’s defense this year after a shaky season at the back last season. Bayern decided to mend this issue by signing Hernandez and Pavard. Kovac will have flexible options at his disposal as both French defenders can also play in the full-back positions.

Bayern has balanced the defensive personnel by selling Mats Hummels to Borussia Dortmund. Jerome Boateng meanwhile faces an uncertain future at the club as Fenerbahce has recently interest in signing him on a loan deal. The German defender is way below in the pecking order at Die Roten, so a transfer before deadline day looks best possible solution for all the parties involved.
