Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac is frustrated with the result against Borussia Dortmund despite delivering a decent performance.

The new season started on a sour note for Bayern Munich as they failed to retain the DFL Supercup against Borussia Dortmund. Die Roten succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against the last year’s Bundesliga runner’s up.

Bayern started the game slowly, but eventually settled in and started dominating the game midway through the first half. The Bavarians missed numerous opportunities to find the back of the net, which eventually haunted them as Dortmund took their chances and scored two goals in the second half.

Niko Kovac expressed his disappointment about the defeat in his post-match press conference. Speaking to media (via Goal), Kovac admitted that the performance from his team was fairly decent but they failed to finish their chances. The Croatian also added that poor decision making led to Dortmund’s two goals.

"“Of course, we’re sad we lost the match today. I think we turned in a decent display, not a very good one, but decent.”“We were dominant, we made two mistakes Dortmund capitalized on. We failed to take our chances, which is why we lost the match.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

This game further strengthened the need for signings at Bayern. The defense struggled while the absence of a proper number six in the squad was highlighted in this game. Kovac will be hoping that these issues are sorted before the start of the Bundesliga campaign.

There are no doubts about tactical errors from Kovac in last night’s game, but lack of options from the bench is a serious cause of concern for Die Roten. The Bundesliga champions ideally need two wingers right now. However, Kovac will be satisfied if the club manages to complete the signing of Leroy Sane from Manchester City.

Dortmund meanwhile showed signs of adaptability in this game. They soaked up all the pressure from Bayern and threatened to find the back of the net on every counterattack. Dortmund has done some smart business in this transfer market, making them a formidable challenger for the Bundesliga title this season.

This game should be a wake-up call for the Bayern chiefs. The German club needs to accelerate the transfer activity in the next four weeks and try to complete at least two more signings. Die Roten will have to move quickly if they want to complete the deal for Sane. Man City is unlikely to entertain offers for the German winger after Thursday’s deadline day for Premier League clubs.

Apart from a winger, a holding midfielder should be the priority for Bayern before the deadline day. Espanyol’s Marc Roca has emerged as the transfer target for Die Roten in this position. Espanyol reportedly wants complete release clause for the Spanish midfielder while Bayern wants to negotiate a fee.
