Serge Gnabry wins player of the year award at Bayern Munich
Serge Gnabry has been voted as the fans player of the year after an impressive debut campaign at Bayern Munich.
Bayern Munich finished the season in an emphatic manner as they retained the Bundesliga title and won the DFB Pokal. Niko Kovac was under immense pressure throughout his debut season as the results were inconsistent but the Bavarians found a way to get over the finishing line in the domestic competitions.
Die Roten had an ageing squad last season and the club chiefs wanted to give a perfect farewell to some of the veteran players. The club will now look to bring in talented young players to build the spine of the squad in order to achieve short term and long term goals.
The veteran players were not exactly at their best this season but the likes of Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski delivered yet another fantastic season. These two players were the hot favorites to be named club’s player of the year but the fans had a different player in their thoughts for this award.

Bayern Munich announced on Friday that Serge Gnabry has been voted as the player of the season by the fans. Kimmich was Gnabry’s closest competitor as the former missed out the first position by few votes. Robert Lewandowski, Niklas Sule, and Franck Ribery were the other players that finished in top five positions of this poll.
After an impressive loan spell at Hoffenheim last year, Bayern decided to involve Gnabry with the first team this season. He started the season slowly but eventually picked up form and became a key player for Kovac. The German winger ended the campaign with 13 goals and six assists across all competitions. Uli Hoeness has been impressed by the growth of Gnabry throughout his first season at the club.
Gnabry’s consistent performances eventually earned him a new contract at the club. His previous contract was due to expire at the end of next season but Bayern moved quickly to secure the future of the 23-year-old winger. The former Arsenal forward will have an even more important role in the squad after the departures of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. His performances at club level have also allowed him to consolidate his place in the national team.
The German international had a productive first season but he should be aiming for 20 goals across all competitions next year. Gnabry will have more intense competition in the squad next season as Bayern is looking to sign at least one attacking player this summer. It has been a fantastic debut season for Gnabry but there is still a lot more to come from the young German winger.
