Bayern Munich has reached a complete agreement with Borussia Dortmund for Mats Hummels.

There are going to be big changes in the Bayern Munich squad this summer. The Bundesliga champions have finally decided to replace the older stars with top young talent. The much-anticipated summer transfer window for Die Roten has started with a high profile departure.

Bayern Munich has officially confirmed the departure of Mats Hummels. The German defender is set to re-join Borussia Dortmund after a three-year spell in Bavaria. Hummels will now undergo medical at Dortmund in coming days.

The transfer fee has not been officially disclosed by the two clubs. However, SportBild is reporting that Bayern will get a fixed €31.5 million fee and bonuses close to €6-7 million. The other German outlets are also insisting a fee close to these numbers.

Hummels has been pushing for this transfer as he reportedly felt that he is not being acknowledged at Bayern. The German defender had already given the green light to this transfer and agreed a three year deal with Dortmund. The Bundesliga runners-up were eager to add an experienced head in the squad in order to challenge for trophies next season.

Bayern signed Hummels from Dortmund in 2016 for a similar fee. The 2014 World Cup winner slotted straightaway into the starting lineup under Carlo Ancelotti and became a pivotal player for Die Roten. Even after the departure of Ancelotti, Hummels continued to deliver impressive performances under Jupp Heynckes.

After a difficult World Cup with Germany last summer, Hummels struggled to emulate his best performances for Bayern. Niko Kovac also switched to an aggressive rotation policy that saw lineup being changed almost every game. Hummels accepted this challenge and slowly improved his performances as the season progressed. He ended the campaign strongly as he became first choice center-back under Kovac but he was ready to keep his options open this summer.

It has been a successful stint for Hummels at Bayern as he won three consecutive Bundesliga titles. The German defender also won three DFL Supercups and one DFB Pokal during his three years at the club. Die Roten struggled to achieve success in Europe during this time but Hummels consistently delivered top performances in all competitions.

This transfer is the best possible outcome for all parties. Dortmund gets a natural leader while Bayern is getting a good fee for a player who was going to be a squad player next season. Hummels will play regularly at Dortmund and will be hoping to break into the national team once again. There is no doubt that the Bayern fans will fondly remember his time at the club.
