Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says Bayern Munich should not only aspire to win silverware but to do it playing attractive football.

Bayern Munich finished the season positively by clinching the Bundesliga title and DFB Pokal in the final few weeks of the campaign. There have been many ups and downs this season, and there has been constant speculation around Niko Kovac’s position at the club.

The Croatian is now expected to be Bayern’s manager next season after guiding them to the domestic double. The club’s defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League raised doubts regarding Kovac’s future at the club. There were also doubts raised over his style of play, despite Bayern scoring more goals in the Bundesliga this season than last season.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge made some skeptical statements about Kovac a few months back. Recently, however, in an interview with Der Speigel (via Sport1), Rummenigge congratulated Kovac for finishing this season strongly. The club’s CEO also insisted that Bayern should aim to play a more attractive brand of football next season.

"“I am very satisfied with the outcome of the season. I do not know any club that would have fired his coach after the double.“Under Louis van Gaal, Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola, Bayern played spectacular football, that had something of Tiki-Taka.“This style of play should also be the aim of the club in the future”."

Rummenigge also insisted he was pleased with the increased competition in the Bundesliga this season. Die Roten have won the last few Bundesliga titles by wide margins, but this season Borussia Dortmund competed until the final match day.

Bayern will bid farewell to some of their veteran players this off-season. The club will now start building a side that can compete on all fronts for many seasons. They have already taken massive strides in addressing their defensive woes by signings two top defenders in Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard. Kovac will be hoping that with new additions to the squad, the style of play will eventually improve.

The Croatian manager will also need new ideas to get the better of top managers in the Champions League next season. Another early exit in the competition could spell the end of Kovac at Bayern. The results will eventually dictate his future with the Bundesliga champions. The club hierarchy should also back their manager publicly, though, instead of making ambiguous comments about him during the season.

There has been a lot of talk about a European Superleague instead of the traditional competition. Rummenigge insisted in this interview that he is completely against such type of reforms, but instead sees the Champions League as the best option for competitive football across the continent.
