A report from England claims Bayern Munich have contacted Manchester City over a possible transfer for 23-year-old winger Leroy Sane.

Bayern Munich have just two games remaining in the 2018-19 season, but they still have much to play for. The Bavarians could be crowned Bundesliga champions this weekend with a win or draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, then they’ll face RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal final the following weekend.

As the season draws to its conclusion, Die Roten surely have one eye on the transfer market, where they’ll be expected to be very busy this summer. Several veterans are ending their careers in the Bavarians capital, and Bayern are hoping to initiate one of the biggest squad overhauls in the club’s history.

France internationals Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez have already been secured as new players for next season, meaning Bayern’s defense is largely taken care of. Die Roten can now switch their attention to adding firepower in attack — specifically on the wings.

More from Bayern Strikes

Bayern have been linked with a handful of players throughout the last month, but a rumor that emerged today is perhaps the most exciting of them all. According to the Daily Record, Bayern Munich have “opened discussions with Manchester City over the potential summer transfer of Leroy Sane.”

Sane — who made the move to Manchester in the summer of 2016 — is reportedly unsatisfied with his situation with the Premier League winners. Despite consistently performing when called upon, the former Schalke starlet has struggled to be a regular under Pep Guardiola this season. The 23-year-old was an unused sub in City’s title-deciding win over Brighton & Hove Albion this past weekend.

His current contract expires in 2021, and City do not want to risk letting him leave on a free after running down his deal. The club’s director of football, Txiki Begiristian, has apparently told his friends Sane could have to be sold in the upcoming transfer window.

It’s hard to think of many (if any) other wingers Bayern should pursue over Leroy Sane. He’s young, but he has plenty of first team experience; he would be able to immediately challenge for a place in the starting XI while offering a viable option for years to come.

Lightning-quick and with a stellar left foot, there perhaps isn’t a better option to replace Arjen Robben in the Bayern squad than the Manchester City man.

Leroy Sane might cost Bayern upwards of €100 million, even if City really are open to selling him, but that’s a price the Bavarians have to be willing to pay to sign one of the best wingers in the modern game.
