Bayern Munich have reportedly touched base with Thomas Tuchel’s entourage to inquire about the possibility of him coaching the team next season.

It has been an inconsistent season for Bayern Munich, who have struggled to meet their usual high expectations. Die Roten still remain in contention for the Bundesliga title with a four-point lead over Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table. They are also set to face RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal final later this month.

A domestic double generally is more than enough to save a manager’s job, but there is still a lingering air of uncertainty at Bayern about Niko Kovac. The Croatian manager has been subject to much criticism throughout the campaign for Bayern’s poor performances.

Most notably, Bayern’s meek performance against Liverpool in the Champions League round of 16 caused a lot of uproar in Germany.

Kovac was heavily criticized for his team’s elimination from the European competition so early. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recently refused to give any assurances about his future at the club, further adding to the uncertainty about Kovac’s position at the club.

More from Bayern Strikes

Bayern have recently been linked with both Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag as possible managers next season. The French media is now reporting that Bayern are also looking at Paris-Saint Germain’s Thomas Tuchel.

According to RMCSport, Bayern have already contacted Tuchel’s entourage as the German club is closely following his situation at PSG. The report claims Die Roten will have to face competition from Chelsea for Tuchel’s services and further adds that ten Hag is also in the running to be Bayern’s next manager.

Tuchel recently signed an extension at PSG, but the club’s poor second half of the season has raised doubts over his future at the club. The former Borussia Dortmund manager previously emerged as the prime candidate to manage Bayern when Carlo Ancelotti was sacked last season. Tuchel, however, rejected the advances from the Bavarians and decided to join PSG.

The French giants will end the season with as Ligue 1 champions, but they have struggled to do well in the cup competitions — particularly in the Champions League.

There is going to be a squad upheaval at Bayern Munich this summer. The club needs to make a decision about the coach quickly in order to avoid clashes during recruitment. If Kovac goes on to win a double, it will be difficult to part ways with him. It would be also harsh to judge him based on one season with this aging Bayern squad.

Bayern will be better placed at the end of next season to make a decision on Kovac. Moreover, the above-mentioned coaches will be realistically ready and available to take up this job at the start of the 2020/21 season.
