Franz Beckenbauer is not completely sold on Niko Kovac and believes his former club, Bayern Munich, need new ideas next season.

Bayern Munich are enduring a poor season by their usual high standards. The German giants were knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16, after suffering an embarrassing defeat against Liverpool at the Allianz Arena.

Their Champions League elimination was not totally disappointing, as Liverpool are one of the best teams in Europe. The manner of the defeat, however, was appalling. Bayern looked pretty flat and hapless at the Allianz Arena, lacking ideas in the final third. Speaking to Sky Germany, Franz Beckenbauer recently insisted that Niko Kovac might not be the right coach for Bayern going forward. The German legend suggested that his former club may need some new ideas to go along with their new players.

"“There is a difference between coaching Bayern and other Bundesliga teams. I don’t know whether Kovac can make it.“When this season is complete, you may go with other ideas or concepts into the next season, which would certainly not hurt.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Kovac made a fine start to his Bayern tenure after an emphatic win over his former side Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFL Supercup. The defending champions also began their Bundesliga season in a dominant way, winning their first four games.

Die Roten dropped points after their excellent run early in the season and then went without a win for four games across all competitions. Kovac’s rotation policy was under scrutiny, and there were reports that his players were unhappy with his methods. The club chiefs backed Kovac publicly and ultimately decided against sacking him.

The Croatian finally found the right balance in his starting eleven just before the winter break and decided to stick with what worked for a long run of games. Bayern have just dropped points once since December and overcome Dortmund’s lead at the top of the table. Their poor performance against Liverpool is the only major disappointment that has brought the pressure back on Kovac.

Bayern are in pole position to win both domestic competitions in Germany, provided they prolong their recent form for the next two months. It would be very harsh to cut ties with Kovac if he manages to win the domestic double. Bayern Munich will spend big this summer and are likely to give Kovac more options in all departments of the squad. It’ll be much more appropriate to judge him next season, but there’s no doubt he needs to improve his team’s performances in Europe.
