Bayern Munich are reportedly holding intense negotiations with RB Leipzig in order to sign Timo Werner in the summer transfer window.

Bayern Munich’s Champions League loss to Liverpool last week serves as another catalyst for a big squad overhaul in the summer. Die Roten will likely be one of the busiest clubs in Europe in the summer transfer market as they seek to replace some of their departing veterans with younger talents.

There will be at least a few additions in attack, with both Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery ending their illustrious careers in Munich this May. The Bavarians have been heavily linked with Nicolas Pepe and Callum Hudson-Odoi throughout the season, and have reportedly tabled a massive offer for the former in the past few days. Bayern don’t necessarily need a pure number nine right now, but the club is apparently keen on signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

According to Kicker (via Sport1), Bayern have entered intense negotiations with RB Leipzig for Werner’s signature. Leipzig are hoping to sell their star striker in summer with his current contract expiring in 2020. Previous German reports have suggested that Werner has already agreed personal terms with Bayern, but now the two clubs have begun official talks.

More from Bayern Strikes

RB Leipzig are on the weaker side of negotiations due to Werner’s contract situation. Bayern will be eyeing a cut-price deal for the striker since he will be out of contract at Leipzig at the end of next season. Liverpool have been heavily linked with Werner as well in recent months and might be the Bavarians’ strongest competitor for the 23-year-old.

Die Roten might wait til 2020 and sign Werner on a free transfer if Leipzig fail to agree a fee this summer. The player has previously hinted at his desire to make the move to Munich sometime in the future.

Kicker also gave an update on Bayern’s interest in Bayer Leverkusen starlet Kai Havertz in their report. They suggest the reigning German champions will postpone their attempts to sign the 19-year-old until next summer.

Havertz has been linked with Bayern on several occasions, and it really seems like the move will happen eventually. His current contract at Leverkusen is set to expire in 2022, which makes it a difficult operation for this summer, though.

Bayern Munich have a good history of bringin in Germany’s top talents rather than searching abroad for established stars. Havertz and Werner are amongs the best young players in Europe — let along Germany. The duo will surely improve this Bayern team. However, the Bavarians can afford to wait for these players for one more season, provided they have already agreed personal terms with them.
