Serge Gnabry

Serge Gnabry could hardly have asked for a better debut season than the one he’s had at Bayern this campaign. Despite the team’s struggle with form at several points toward the beginning of the term, Gnabry has remained a constant threat in attack. Not many expected the former Arsenal “flop” to become one of Bayern Munich’s most important offensive players, especially not so quickly.

Nevertheless, that is exactly what the 23-year-old has done. Only Robert Lewandowski has more goals under his belt for the season than Gnabry’s nine (seven in the Bundesliga) across all competitions. He’s contributed with a handful of assists as well, showing he can do more than put the ball in the back of the net.

More from Bayern Strikes

While veterans Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery have both struggled with various injuries this season (particularly the former) and Kingsley Coman has spent more time sidelined than on the pitch, Gnabry has often found himself the only “true” winger at Niko Kovac’s disposal. And he’s stepped up time and time again.

Whether deployed on the left flank or the right, Serge Gnabry has been the Bavarians’ best winger this season, and he’s set to play a key role once again when Bayern host Liverpool tomorrow.

Kingsley Coman has raced back to fitness, while Franck Ribery has just recently made his return from a lengthy layoff as well. There’s still no certainty over which of the Frenchman — if either — will start tomorrow. However, the Croatian can take comfort in knowing his most prolific wideman of the season is fit and in form.

Gnabry is excellent on the ball, capable of driving play forward and taking on his defender in a one-on-one before firing home a precision strike or setting someone else up to do the same. Bayern Munich will need him to be at his best tomorrow if they hope to have any firepower in attack. Fortunately for them, Gnabry’s in the perfect form to step up against Liverpool and prove to all of Europe that he’s capable of not only playing but excelling at the very highest level.
