Bayern Munich received positive news on the injury front today, as David Alaba and Kingsley Coman both trained with the first team.

The past few seasons have been woeful for Bayern Munich in terms of injuries ahead of big Champions League matches. Die Roten are yet to reach the final of the competition since 2013, and injuries have played their part in these regular failures. The injury struggles have continued this season, but there is some good news for Bayern ahead of their clash against Liverpool.

David Alaba and Kingsley Coman returned to first team training on Monday. The duo trained normally, and there is a great chance both will start against the Merseyside club on Wednesday.

Niko Kovac will no doubt see this as a massive boost to his tactical plan as both Coman and Alaba played a key role in their gritty 0-0 draw at Anfield a few weeks ago.

More from Bayern Strikes

Coman injured his hamstring in Bayern’s game against Hertha Berlin at the end of February. The Frenchman came on as a second-half substitute in this game but lasted only a few minutes on the pitch. There were initially concerns about 22-year-old’s availability for the clash against Liverpool, but it now seems he’ll be ready to go on Wednesday.

On the other hand, Alaba sat out of the last two matches due to muscle irritations. The Austrian started light training sessions before the game against Wolfsburg. It was expected that he would play in this game, but Bayern decided not to take the risk. Having been rested, Alaba will now be completely fresh and fit for Liverpool.

The Austrian’s role is crucial in this game as he will be primarily tasked to deal with Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has been a prolific goalscorer for Liverpool in the past two seasons and will be eager to do the same against Bayern. Alaba did a fine job in this role at Anfield, and Kovac will be hoping he does the same in the home leg. The Austrian’s injury allowed Kovac to give Rafinha — who will have to fill in on Wednesday for the suspended Joshua Kimmich — some much needed minutes as well.

Kimmich isn’t the only player suspended for Wednesday’s match; Bayern will also be without Thomas Muller. Arjen Robben and Corentin Tolisso, meanwhile, are still recovering from their respective injuries, but they are both expected to be back in action by the end of the month. Niko Kovac, along with all Bayern fans, will be hoping that once Robben and Tolisso recover the Bavarians can head into the final stage of the season with a fully fit squad.
