According to information from AZ, former Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn will join the clubs board of directors by 2020.

Bayern Munich are in a transitional phase at the moment. Their 2018-19 season has so far not lived up to the expectations set since they won the treble under Jupp Heynckes in 2013. There are many factors that contribute to this, but it can most easily be summed up by saying the Bavarians are in a rebuilding year of sorts.

Several of the club’s key players from the past decade are now past their prime (e.g., Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery), while others are struggling to produce at the same level that put them among the best players in the world (e.g., Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng).

Of course, Bayern’s squad cannot be entirely blamed for the less-than-spectacular results this season. Much of the blame also falls on shoulders of Bayern’s executives, particularly club President Uli Hoeness and CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

More from Bayern Strikes

Many believe the duo have failed to add enough youth to the squad, despite the problem growing more and more evident in each of the past few seasons.

Much like the Bayern squad, however, the club’s executive staff is in a rebuilding phase of its own. Both Hoeness and Rummenigge have served their time among the Bayern hierarchy, and it’s time they pass the reins to a new generation of executive leadership. The former Bayern players have both openly admitted this as well, assuring fans they are looking for the right candidates to replace them.

Among the names rumored as part of the replacement plan, one man has stood out the most: Oliver Kahn. Der Titan has been heavily linked with a return to Bayern Munich, and both Hoeness and Rummenigge have hinted that the legendary goalkeeper could soon be on Die Roten‘s payroll once more.

According to AZ, Kahn will join the Bayern board by 2020 and will take over from Kerl-Heinz Rummenigge by 2021 at the latest. Kahn has a few degrees that make him a great candidate for the role, and he has even own company, Goalplay, to train goalkeepers online.

By all accounts, Kahn seems like a great candidate to take over from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in the near future. Unquestionably a Bayern Munich legend, he would immediately command the respect of the players and fans alike. He knows the ins-and-outs of the club and seems to have an aptitude for business. Hiring him would be a huge statement from the Bavarians that they still operate under their “Mia San Mia” motto but are also capable of producing qualified candidates to lead their club.
