Bayern Munich have reportedly already agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid’s World Cup winning defender, Lucas Hernandez.

The summer transfer window is still three months away but Bayern Munich have already begun their work to help with their impending squad overhaul. Several veteran players are heading for the exit door at the end of the season, and the club chiefs have continually insisted they will be ready to spend big in the summer window.

Hasan Salihamidzic has already begun his work of securing Bayern’s main summer targets. He tried to secure the signing of Lucas Hernandez in January, but Atletico Madrid weren’t keen on losing a key player midway through the season. The Bavarians also decided against activating the Frenchman’s release clause to avoid any bad blood between the two clubs.

According to Sport Bild, though, Bayern have already agreed personal terms with Hernandez. Their report claims that an actual transfer agreement is now just a formality; the player has already reached a personal agreement with the club for the summer.

More from Bayern Strikes

Bayern reportedly sought help from Giovanni Branchini, the same man who helped them get Pep Guardiola, to get this deal over the line. Die Roten will ideally try to negotiate a lower fee with Atletico Madrid than paying his €80 million release clause, but Uli Hoeness recently confirmed his club would be willing to pay such a fee. Salihamidzic also told Sport Bild that there have been positive discussions for Hernandez.

The French international is a complete modern defender. He is very good at playing out from the back along with being defensively strong. Hernandez was one of the best defenders at the World Cup as Didier Deschamps utilised his qualities in the left-back position. The sky is the ceiling for Hernandez as there is more to come from the 23-year-old center-back.

Bayern has been very fragile defensively this season. Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels have been in sharp decline this season as their lack of pace have been exploited by the forwards on a regular basis. Hernandez will help in bringing more solidity to Bayern’s defense. However, his signing might end the time of at least one of the veteran German defenders.

Hernandez will be able to provide cover for two areas in the defense. He has been largely used as a left-back for club and country but his best position is in the center of defense. The Frenchman will most likely become a first choice center-back along with Niklas Sule at Bayern next season. Though the transfer fee he demands is quite high, Lucas Hernandez will be a great addition to this Bayern squad.
