Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac is confident that his side can overcome Borussia Dortmund and win the Bundesliga title.

It has been an exciting Bundesliga campaign so far this season, as there is finally a title race in Germany. Bayern Munich have struggled in the league under Niko Kovac, while Borussia Dortmund have excelled under their new coach Lucien Favre. Die Roten currently remain two points behind the league leaders, but BVB still have a game in hand.

Kovac made a fantastic start to his tenure at Bayern, but his team has consistently dropped points since October. The defending champions have been particularly poor at home as their defense continues to leak cheap goals. Speaking to the Bundesliga’s official site, Kovac predicted that Bayern will eventually overhaul Dortmund’s lead at the top.

"“It’s a special situation, one which Bayern haven’t been in for the past six years, but that’s how it is.“We’re not completely satisfied with the situation, we’d like to be first, but we’re making the most out of it, we’re trying to deliver performances, win matches and to close the gap Borussia Dortmund have at the top.“We’re confident of doing all of that, and we’re confident we’ll get there in the end.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

The Croatian also spoke about his first year in Bavaria as manager. Kovac is happy with the way his team has progressed and is confident he’ll be able to lead the club through this time of transition.

Kovac also hailed the qualities the qualities of his corps of young German players like Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry. He also has big hopes for summer signing Alphonso Davies, and tips the young Canadian to become a star at Bayern.

There have been some question marks over Bayern’s form in the league, but they have enjoyed a decent run in their cup competitions. Bayern have reached the quarterfinals of the DFB Pokal, while they went unbeaten in the group stage of the Champions League. Die Roten also delivered an emphatic performance to win the DFL Supercup at the start of the season.

Robert Lewandowski was the subject of some heavy criticism from Dietmar Hamann last week. The Bayern executives defended him publicly, though, and Kovac has now done the same. The Croatian asserted that Lewandowski is one of the top three strikers in the world and a big leader in the Bayern squad.

Kovac’s biggest test as Bayern manager is coming up on Tuesday when his guys face Liverpool in the first knockout round of the Champions League. The Croatian manager’s tactical nous will be tested in this tie, as Jurgen Klopp’s team is one of the best in Europe. Kovac has shown some promising signs in an underwhelming season for Bayern. Die Roten must remain patient with their new coach. They’ll be able to make a more accurate evaluation of him and his methods toward the end of the year.
