Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer is confident that he will be fit for his side’s big Champions League game against Liverpool next week.

The next few weeks will be a critical period for Bayern Munich as far as it concerns their title hopes for the season. Die Roten will have to keep winning their Bundesliga games in order to put pressure on Borussia Dortmund, but they must also focus on getting a big win over Liverpool in their Champions League round of 16 tie.

Niko Kovac will need a fit and firing squad to advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League this season. The Croatian is likely to receive a massive boost in that department, as Manuel Neuer is confident he’ll be fit for the game at Anfield. Speaking to ESPN, Neuer insisted that his recovery is going well and that he is looking forward to the big game against the English club.

"“I am fine, it’s not that bad. I think our medical staff will push me into the goal and if everything is fine in training, I will play against Liverpool.“It’s the first game for me at Anfield. I’m looking forward to playing there. We have heard a lot about the atmosphere in the stadium, everyone who watches football knows it’s special and I think they will be two great games.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Neuer suffered an injury to his right hand before the game against Bayer Leverkusen a few weekend’s ago. He returned to first team training quickly but avoided doing goalkeeping drills, as his hand needed more time to recover. The German international has missed three games since suffering this injury, but he will be hoping to feature against Augsburg on Friday to get some match rhythm before the game against Liverpool.

Liverpool are one of the most in-form teams in Europe right now. They have been brilliant in the Premier League, where they are involved in an exciting title race with Manchester City. The English club did fantastically in the Champions League last season, eventually reaching the finals. Liverpool had to work hard to get out of their group this season, but they still remain one of the favorites in this competition.

Jurgen Klopp also has plenty of experience playing against Bayern Munich. Kovac will have to come up with something special in terms of tactics to contain Liverpool’s attack. Die Roten will have to defend resolutely at Anfield, and Manuel Neuer will have a big role to play in this game. The German goalkeeper has not been at his absolute best this season, but he has a knack of delivering in big games.

Neuer’s return is a big boost for Bayern, but they will have to defend better than they have in the Bundesliga this season. The Bavarians are not favorites for this tie due to the form and performances of both teams this season. However, Bayern have the players to get past Liverpool and enter the next round of the Champions League.
