World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard is looking forward to his move to Bayern Munich, the club he calls the “best in the world,” this summer.

After strong speculation for about half a year, Bayern Munich finally secured the signing of Benjamin Pavard from VfB Stuttgart last month. The Bavarians announced the Frenchman’s signature last month, but he will not join the club until next season. Several of Europe’s top clubs were after the 22-year-old, so it’s great to know Bayern have already completed a deal for the defender.

Pavard continuously dismissed rumors suggesting a move to Bayern had already been decided throughout the first half of the season. The France international always insisted he wants to stay at Stuttgart for at least one more season. Speaking to Bild (via Goal) last weekend, Pavard claimed that Bayern is the best club in the world, a factor that played a big role in deciding upon his future.

"“When FC Bayern’s offer came, I did not have to think for a second.“Bayern is for me the best club in the world. I want to continue the history of this club, win many titles there. Bayern can definitely win the Champions League,”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Bayern were reportedly eager to sign Pavard in January to add depth to their defense heading into the second half of the season. The form of veteran defenders Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng has been a major concern for Niko Kovac this season. His defense cannot stop conceding simple goals. Pavard would have provided more competition and quality at both center-back and right-back, but Stuttgart were not ready to lose a key player when they are involved in a relegation battle.

Pavard’s versatility allow him to play in several positions. He’s not worried where on the pitch he plays for Bayern, he just wants to help contribute his best for the team. He has primarily operated as a central defender for Stuttgart, but he played right-back for France at the World Cup, helping them lift the trophy with several good displays. The 22-year-old also has the qualities to play as a defensive midfielder if necessary.

Pavard is likely to slot in at right-back and central defense at Bayern. Joshua Kimmich has enjoyed mixed fortunes in central midfield this season, but Kovac believes he can provide the perfect balance of attack and defense when operating in midfield. If Kimmich becomes a full-time midfielder next season, then Pavard is likely to see the majority of his time spent on the right side of defense.

Bayern, meanwhile, could sign yet another French defender in the summer. Lucas Hernandez has been heavily linked with Die Roten in the past few months. The World Cup winner had reportedly accepted an offer from Bayern in January, but Atletico Madrid were not interested in selling him during the winter market. Furthermore, the Bavarians did not want to ruin their relationship with the Spanish club by activating the player’s release clause. The potential addition of Hernandez, along with Pavard, would surely help rectify the club’s defensive frailties.
