Polish superstar Robert Lewandowski has urged Bayern Munich to bring in a few world class players rather than many depth players.

The winter transfer window is wide open, and all eyes are on Bayern Munich, who may be keen on reinforcing their squad over the next month. The Bavarians may opt to remain quiet in January, but there are a few areas of their squad they would be better off addressing sooner rather than later.

Bayern appeared set to activate Lucas Hernandez’s release clause this month, but it now seems they will hold off on buying the player til the summer in hopes of keeping a good relationship with Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi recently emerged as a prime transfer target for Die Roten, but the Blues have driven his price up to €40 million — a fee far too high for Bayern. It’s yet to be seen how Christian Pulisic’s recently announced transfer will impact this deal, but it’s now unlikely Hudson-Odoi makes the move to Munich over the winter break.

More from Bayern Strikes

Whether in this window or the next, Bayern are on the verge of making some big changes to their squad. Several first team players are set to leave the club, and a few have already confirmed their exits.

Star striker Robert Lewandowski recently spoke with Sport Bild about his club’s transitional phase. The Pole urged his side to focus on signing a few world class players instead of several good players.

"“I think it helps us more to sign one or two top players than five players at a good level.“If a player like Arjen [Robben] leaves, you just need new top players. We need players who really make us better and take us up a level.”"

The Bayern board has made clear that the club is focused on signing younger talents rather than spending big on European stars. However, recent comments from Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge suggest they may be willing to splash the cash on some big name players.

While Lewandowski is right that his club needs to focus on securing top players, Bayern already have two of Europe’s best young wingers in Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry. Both players are ready to take the next step in their careers and prove they can be Die Roten’s long-term replacement to Robbery. Bayern Munich must give them the chance to prove themselves.

Furthermore, James Rodriguez’s move from Real Madrid shows Bayern Munich are able to move for Europe’s best players without sacrificing the transfer market prudence for which they have become so renown.

In other areas of the pitch, Lucas Hernandez would be a big signing that signals intent from the Bavarians. Surely Lewandowski would have no complaints with the Frenchman joining his side.
