Bayern Munich reportedly have formed a gentleman’s agreement with Atletico Madrid to not sign Lucas Hernandez in January.
The winter transfer window is just a week away and Bayern Munich are hard at work trying to sign players to rejuvenate their aging squad. Lucas Hernandez recently emerged as a top transfer target for the Bavarians, and it is believed in Spain that Bayern have already agreed personal terms with the French defender.
According to the latest report from AS, Bayern will not sign Hernandez in the winter window. The German club has reportedly made a gentleman agreement with Atletico Madrid that they will not trigger his release clause in January window. This report suggests that the clubs will negotiate for the player at the end of the season.
Bayern have tried to maintain good relations with all clubs they’ve dealt with in the past several transfer windows. The club reportedly wants to continue this theme. They do not want to damage their relationship with Atletico Madrid by signing Hernandez midway through the season.
Though this approach will help Bayern in their future dealings with Atletico, it also has some major drawbacks.

Die Roten will have much competition, though, from wealthier clubs in the summer if Hernandez keeps on delivering consistent performances for Atletico Madrid. Moreover, these six months would allow Hernandez to completely settle in the Bundesliga and be ready for next season.
Bayern have struggled defensively this season, so signing Hernandez would be a major boost to their Bundesliga title hopes, as well as their hopes of winning the Champions League.
Benjamin Pavard, on the other hand, has once again denied any sort of transfer agreement with Bayern Munich. VfB Stuttgart’s French defender has been heavily linked with Bayern in the past six months. ESPN recently reported that Bayern have a verbal agreement with Pavard and will activate his release clause in the summer. The 21-year-old defender reportedly wants to join Bayern in January, however, as he is unsettled at Stuttgart due to their ongoing relegation battle.
Bayern Munich failed to show any sort of ruthlessness last summer in terms of building a better squad. They need to act in a more convincing manner now and try to bring in some top players soon. The transfer market is inflated, so a club needs to act swiftly in order to sign their targets. The Bavarians can focus on maintaining their relationships with other clubs but not at the risk of missing out on world-class players.
