Bayern Munich must improve says Robert Lewandowski
Robert Lewandowski was disappointed with the performance from Bayern Munich against Ajax on Wednesday.
Bayern Munich clinched the top spot in Group E of the Champions League after playing out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Ajax on Wednesday. This result ended Bayern’s mini-run of three wins across all competitions. The match saw the good, bad and ugly of both teams, as there were goals galore accompanied by two red cards.
Die Roten will be pretty pleased with their overall Champions League campaign so far, as they remained unbeaten throughout the group phase. However, the players should be unhappy with their performance on Wednesday. Speaking to the press after the game (via Goal), Robert Lewandowski admitted that his side didn’t perform to their potential against Ajax. The Polish striker wants his team to be more efficient in the final third and give no sniff to their opponents.
"“That was a very offensive game. But what we showed in the possession game wasn’t good. That was missing.“Ajax had more ball possession. We still had a lot of opportunities, but we didn’t use them. We have a lot more potential.”"

Lewandowski should be pleased with his individual performance, though. The Polish striker finished as the top scorer of this season’s Champions League group stage after scoring a brace against Ajax. He has regained his goal-scoring form and is now finding the net almost every game. His numbers have been brilliant this season; he’s already scored 21 goals across all competition and set up 4 more.
Hasan Salihamidzic also expressed his discontent about the team’s performance against Ajax. Niko Kovac, on the other hand, had a different point of view on the game. The Croatian manager was satisfied with the performance of his players, especially compared to the woes of Real Madrid. Kovac also insisted that Bayern had more clear-cut chances to kill the game that they wasted.
It was a missed opportunity for Bayern on Wednesday, as a convincing win against Ajax would have guaranteed a corner turned under Kovac. The defensive problems are not at all going away, though, and Bayern’s center-backs continue to make errors in every game. The Bavarians will have to pay a heavy price if they make these type of mistakes in the round of 16.
Bayern Munich will now switch their attention to the Bundesliga as they have no Champions League games until February. They will be hoping to decrease Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga in the next few weeks. They travel to Hannover this weekend and will be aiming to win their third consecutive league game. There are only three games left before the winter break and Bayern cannot afford any slip-ups if they want to have a chance at winning the league this season.
