Jerome Boateng: Bayern Munich are still the best in Germany
Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng doesn’t believe that there has been a change of guard in the Bundesliga.
The 2018-19 Bundesliga season has not gone the way many expected it would so far. Bayern Munich have dominated the German top flight for the past six seasons, winning each by a considerable margin.
This year, however, they find themselves out of the top four only 13 games into the season. The Allianz Arena is not looking a fortress for Bayern anymore, as they have already dropped seven points at home.
Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, are flying high at the top of the Bundesliga table. Dortmund remains unbeaten in the league after clinching a thrilling 3-2 victory over Bayern just before the winter break.

There has been talk of a power shift in Germany as the Rekordmeister trail the leaders by seven points. In an interview with Sport Bild, Jerome Boateng dismissed any talk of a change of power in Germany, claiming Bayern can climb out of the whole they have dug for themselves.
"“For a change of the guard, BVB would have to win the championship by a big margin for six, seven years in a row. Or win games 4-1, 5-1 against us. They did not do that.“That’s why there is no change of guard in Germany. It is a phase in which Dortmund is right at the front. We got ourselves into it, as we did not win our home games, among other things. But the tide can also turn around quickly.”"
Niko Kovac made a very promising start to his debut campaign with Bayern Munich. Though his side didn’t totally convince in their opening few matches, they ground out some important wins. This approach was not sustainable, and eventually Bayern started dropping points.
They went on a run of four winless games across all competitions heading into the second international break of the season. Kovac’s men responded well, but their performances remained unconvincing.
The game against Borussia Dortmund was not perfect, but it should become a template for Kovac. Bayern looked good in the final third against their modern rivals. Kovac needs to tighten his team’s defense, though. Manuel Neuer has managed to keep only two clean sheets in the Bundesliga this season.
It is going remain an exciting season for neutral Bundesliga fans, as there will be a genuine title race. The competitive league campaign will also hopefully help Bayern Munich do well in Europe. They will have to build on their performance against Borussia Dortmund and win the rest of their games this year. Dortmund will eventually drop points, and Bayern have to be ready to take advantage of that.
Boateng also revealed in this interview that he is not retiring from international soccer any time soon. The former Manchester City defender was not selected for Germany’s games against Russia and the Netherlands. While he didn’t deny the possibility of a future transfer, he is currently only focused on succeeding in Bavaria.
