Oliver Kahn set for Bayern Munich leadership role
Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeping legend Oliver Kahn could soon rejoin his former club in an executive leadership role.
Bayern Munich are currently in transition on the pitch as well as off it. Other than the recent appointment of Niko Kovac as head coach, the Bavarians also appointed Hasan Salihamidzic as sporting director, filling the role previously held by Matthias Sammer.
The next step for Bayern Munich will be to start thinking about the succession plans for CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and President Uli Hoeness. According to a report from Sport Bild, Oliver Kahn is the leading candidate to become the next big figure in the Bavarians’ executive leadership.
Uli Hoeness is still unsure whether or not he will run for club president again in 2019, recently stating that he would be willing to give up his post quickly if there was an obvious candidate to take over. He has an excellent relationship with Kahn, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him support Der Titan as the club’s next president.

Sport Bild also suggest that Hoeness will make his decision as to whether or not he will run for another term by the end of the year.
Kahn could, of course, be a replacement for Rummenigge. His contract at Bayern will expire in 2019 and there hasn’t been much talk of renewal. Bayern would ideally like to keep one of their senior figures, thogh, during these structural changes.
Bayern Munich surely needs a change in leadership. Hoeness and Rummenigge have done a great job throughout their terms, but there is a dire need of fresh ideas to take the club forward. Bayern have always believed in involving former players in administration, so Kahn is the best possible candidate to take up a leadership role right now.
In an interview with Sport Bild earlier this week, Lothar Matthaus backed Kahn to spearhead Bayern to success in the future. The former Germany midfielder and defender believes Kahn has all the required knowledge to succeed in a leadership role at the club.
Matthaus insisted that Bayern should move Rummeinigge to the presidential role, though, while Kahn takes up the role of CEO.
Bayern are currently struggling under Niko Kovac and sit fifth in the Bundesliga table. They trail Borussia Dortmund by seven points after their painful defeat in Der Klassiker two weekends ago. The Bayern squad has many aging players and the affects of poor squad-building are showing right now. They are reportedly going to refresh their squad next summer, though, and that may be the perfect time for them to also make some big changes in their leadership as well.
