Young midfielder Leon Goretzka believes that he has already improved since joining Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.

The summer transfer window was rather uneventful for Bayern Munich, who focused more on trimming their squad than adding to it. Leon Goretzka was the only new player to join the German champions over the summer. Goretkza ran down his contract at Schalke and signed a pre-contract with Bayern in January before officially joining in July. The German midfielder attracted a lot of interest from various big clubs in Europe, but he ultimately decided to stay in the Bundesliga.

Goretzka has hit the ground running in Munich, scoring his first goal in his first start against VfB Stuttgart. He also picked up an assist in what was a complete performance that will give Niko Kovac much to consider when choosing his midfield. While talking to Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (via Bundesliga.com), Goretzka claimed that he has already improved his game since joining Die Roten. The former Schalke midfielder believes his good form in Bavaria can also help him become a decisive player for Germany.

"“The decision to move to Bayern Munich was the next step in my career.“I decided consciously to move to an environment where I could develop further, and where I think I’ve probably already improved. For that to go hand in hand with playing a key role for the national team is a positive side-effect for me.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

The Schalke faithful gave Goretzka a torrid time after his move to Bayern was announced in January. The fans’ rage negatively impacted Goretzka’s performances in the second half of last season. However, the 23-year-old has no regrets his decision. The dynamic midfielder praised those of his former club who supported him during this tough period.

It didn’t take long for Goretzka to settle in Munich, as he has already played with several players with the German national team. Joshua Kimmich, Niklas Sule and Serge Gnabry have played with Goretzka at every age group on the international stage. ogether they have won numerous honors for Germany’s junior teams. Goretzka is hoping to achieving similar success with the senior team. This set of players have become a core group of the senior squad under Joachim Low.

The German champions could have used a player like Goretzka — who provides a goal-scoring threat from midfield — last season. Thiago can provide goals from midfield, but he is likely to play a deeper role under Niko Kovac. Goretzka has the qualities to be a heavy goal-scoring midfielder for Bayern this season. He was not prolific for Schalke last campaign, but he has the tendency to get in promising situations around the box.

Bayern Munich have a perfect blend of players in midfield department. Renato Sanches also came back from his poor loan spell at Swansea City, while the club sold Arturo Vidal and Sebastian Rudy to make place for Goretzka and Sanches. The former Schalke midfielder will have to fight for a place in the starting lineup. The early signs have been promising, though, and the Bavarians will hope their number 18 keeps up his impressive displays.
