Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski scored a fine hat-trick against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday and has received his due praise.

The German champions started their new season on a fantastic note by winning the DFL Supercup yesterday. Bayern Munich, who were shocked by Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB Pokal Final last season, made sure their opponents didn’t receive a similar result in the revenge match. Instead, Bayern won 5-0, giving Niko Kovac the best possible start to life as the new club manager.

There has been a lot of speculation about Robert Lewandowski’s future at the club this summer. The Polish forward was reportedly eager for a move away from Munich. His agent also openly admitted the player’s desire to enjoy new adventure. Bayern, however, made it clear they had — and still have — no intentions to sell their star forward.

Lewandowski was also criticised at the end of last season when he struggled to deliver in the big games. He silenced these critics perfectly with a hat-trick against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. While talking to media after the game (via Goal), Kovac praised his number nine. The Croatian manager is determined to help Lewandowski reach his peak with Bayern again this season.

"“We don’t have to talk that much about Robert. He is a very good and world class striker, who proved this today.”"

Thomas Muller also sang his teammate’s praises after the match. The Bayern vice-captain explained that a performance like this shows why the club was right to keep Lewandowski.

The Pole has been a consistent goalscorer for Bayern Munich since joining the club in 2014. After a decent debut season, Lewandowski has gone past the 40 goal mark in all competitions three times in the past four years.

Lewandowski turns 30 this year, and it is increasingly likely that he’ll see out the remaining years he has left in his prime in Bavaria. This summer could have been his last chance to get a major contract at another big club.

Bayern Munich have not won the Champions League since 2013, despite reaching the semifinals almost every year since. Carlo Ancelotti, who is supposed to be a specialist in the competition, couldn’t take Bayern past the quarterfinals in his sole season at the club.

Robert Lewandowski will be key for Bayern’s European hopes this year. His future is finally sorted now, and he can focus on achieving both the club’s and his own targets for the new season. He has started the season perfectly, and Niko Kovac will be hoping that performances like yesterday’s become the norm.
