The boys are back in town

One of the most encouraging takeaways from yesterday’s match was the exemplary performances from Bayern’s young corps of players. Joshua Kimmich is coming off the best season of his career. Having already established himself as one of the world’s best right-backs after just one season in the position, Kimmich again showed what makes him so special against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Only Mats Hummels had more touches than the 23-year-old, who was heavily involved in Bayern’s build-up throughout the match. His sensational cross set up Robert Lewandowski to open the Bavarians’ scoring, but what really stood out in yesterday’s game was his defending. If there was any area Kimmich left open for criticism last season, it was his defensive ability. Yesterday, however, the right-back was entirely solid, protecting his flank like a complete natural.

Kimmich wasn’t the only Bayern young gun who stepped up against Frankfurt, though. Niklas Sule was up to the challenge as well. The German giant was a steady option for the Bavarians last season, but it looks like he’ll be establishing himself as a surefire starter this campaign.

Sule’s always been a beast with his defending, but hasn’t often looked too comfortable on the ball. That wasn’t the case at all yesterday. Sule looked just as comfortable spraying long balls up the pitch as he did outmuscling every Eintracht Frankfurt forward that came his way.

Kingsley Coman, though he didn’t start, made an immediate impact coming off the bench. The Frenchman replaced Arjen Robben on the right flank in the 57th minute, then scored Bayern’s fourth goal five minutes later. He then produced arguably the most impressive play of the game in the 84th minute. After decimating the Frankfurt defense’s left flank, Coman coolly slid a pass across to Thiago who fired home for Bayern’s fifth.

The Frenchman was superb in his 30-plus minutes on the pitch and looked one of Bayern’s biggest threats on the whole night. So the quesion must be asked: why didn’t Kingsley Coman start?
