Former Bayern Munich striker Giovane Elber has urged Robert Lewandowski to be focused on the upcoming season with the German champions.

According to multiple reports, Robert Lewandowski is looking to leave Bayern Munich in this transfer window and complete his dream move to Real Madrid. The German champions are not going to sell their talismanic striker, though, at any price. Furthermore, Los Blancos have not shown any concrete interest in the player, who is not interested in joining other clubs who have shown interest.

The Polish striker has reported for preseason training in Munich. Lewandowski is expected to get some minutes in Bayern’s friendly against Manchester United on Sunday.

While speaking with Goal, former Bayern star Giovane Elber has urged Lewandowski to keep his focus on Bayern Munich despite his desire to leave the club. The Brazilian added that a lack of focus can be detrimental in big matches.

"“A player has to have his mind on the club he’s at right now, and that’s Bayern.“We saw [a time when Lewandowski wasn’t focused] last season, the time when the club needed Lewandowski most, we didn’t see him at the end. That’s not good for him or for Bayern Munich.  I hope now that when he returns to Bayern Munich and gets back in training that he does so with his mind set on working and nothing else. “"

More from Bayern Strikes

Bayern Munich ended last season on a sour note. The German champions were knocked out by Real Madrid in the Champions League. It was the club’s fourth semifinals defeat in the past five years. The Bavarians also lost the DFB Pokal final 3-1 to an inspired Eintracht Frankfurt side, managed by none other than Niko Kovac.

Lewandowski was subject to much criticism due to his poor performances in these big games. German media not only targeted his performances on the pitch, but even his attitude on the training grounds.

Jupp Heynckes quickly shut down these rumors, though. He was quick to support his star striker, backing his effort in training. Lewandowski reportedly wants more assurances from the club during such difficult situations.

Niko Kovac reaffirmed on Sunday that the club is not going to sell Lewandowski this summer. The Croatian confirmed that the striker still wishes to leave the club, but he remains an integral part of their plans for the upcoming season.

The former Borussia Dortmund forward ended last season with 41 goals across all competitions. Bayern will be hoping that he can keep up his level of goalscoring and add some more in the big games.

Lewandowski is now likely to stay at the club for at least the next two seasons. His current contract will expire in 2021, and as he will be 30 next season, it is unlikely that he will get a big move next summer either.

In his interview, Elber also shared his belief that Niko Kovac was a fine appointment for Bayern. He has backed the Croatian manager to be successful this season and to help lead the club into a new era. The former Bayern striker also believes that the club needs to start the season on a winning note to set the tone for the campaign. Bayern have endured a relatively poor preseason tour as they suffered two consecutive defeats against Juventus and Manchester City while stateside.
