A recent report from Kicker claims Bayern Munich have turned their attention to Barcelona left-back Lucas Digne to replace Juan Bernat.

Juan Bernat’s time at Bayern Munich seems to be drawing to a close. After another unimpressive season in the Bavarian capital, the Spaniard will likely look for greener pastures this summer. It was recently even confirmed by BILD that Bayern are ready to sell the full-back if a good offer comes along.

Selling Bernat would leave die Roten with only one true left-back in David Alaba. Although Rafinha can serve as a left-back if needed, the Brazilian is much more comfortable on the right side of the pitch, where he already deputizes for Joshua Kimmich. He alone cannot provide the squad depth Bayern need.

The club will have to find an adequate replacement for Bernat if he leaves. According to Kicker (via Mark Lovell), the Bavarians believe Barcelona’s Lucas Digne might be their guy. This same report also claims that both Barcelona and Real Madrid are heavily pursuing David Alaba.

More from Bayern Strikes

As for Digne, he’d be a great replacement for Bernat. The Frenchman is a solid defender who is also adept going forward. At 24-years-old, he offers a good blend of youth and experience. He’d make an excellent backup, but would also put pressure on David Alaba to perform at his best every game.

If this rumor is to be believed, Barcelona would likely use Digne to help convince Bayern Munich to sell them Thiago. The Spaniard is reportedly one player Bayern wouldn’t mind offloading this summer for the right price, and the Camp Nou is his most likely destination.

Just yesterday the German champions were linked with a move for former Wolfsburg left-back Ricardo Rodriguez. The Swiss international had a disappointing season with AC Milan and is reportedly ready to move back to the Bundesliga. Although his defending is probably not up to scratch with Digne’s, he’s arguably better in attack.

Either Rodriguez or Digne would be a great purchase and an instant upgrade over Juan Bernat. Though the Spaniard has shown some promising signs during his time in Munich, he has never really challenged David Alaba for a place in the starting XI.

Competition is good and necessary to keep players performing at their best. Securing a more talented left-back would not only strengthen Bayern’s depth but press David Alaba to playing as the world class left-back he has the potential to be.
