German midfielder Sebastian Rudy is eager to stay at Bayern Munich despite a relatively poor season and links with a move to Schalke 04.

The German midfielder has been heavily linked with a move away from Bayern Munich. In the most recent reports, FC Schalke and VFB Stuttgart were mentioned as the clubs interested in signing Sebastian Rudy. Both clubs reportedly want the defensive midfielder on a loan deal.

However, according to SportBild, Schalke and Stuttgart have suffered setbacks in their quest to sign Rudy. The two clubs have held talks with Bayern Munich, but the midfielder is eager to remain in Bavria. Rudy told the same outlet that he is ready to fight for his place at the club next season.

"“I’m still confident that I will play at Bayern Munich next season.”"

More from Bayern Strikes

Rudy joined Bayern Munich last summer on a free transfer from Hoffenheim. The German champions struck a double deal with Hoffenheim, as they also signed Niklas Sule along with Rudy. Both players played a pivotal part in Hoffenheim’s successful ’16-17 campaign, when they finished fourth in the Bundesliga.

The German international enjoyed a good Confederations Cup in the summer, helping Germany lift the trophy. He also started very well for Bayern Munich this past season. Carlo Ancelotti made him an important player in a defensive midfield role. After the departure of Ancelotti, though, Rudy found playing time much harder to come by, as Javi Martinez was moved back into midfield.

Rudy will end the season with 35 appearances across all competitions. He has been rotated with Martinez in the defensive midfield position. He has always remained firm in his position that he is eager to fight for his place at such a big club. Rudy has been selected for Germany’s preliminary squad, and he will no doubt be hoping that he makes the final squad and plays an important role for his nation.

Bayern Munich have already signed Leon Goretzka from Schalke on a free transfer for next season. With Renato Sanches also returning from his loan, the German champions are unlikely to add any more midfielders to their squad in the summer. Arturo Vidal has also been linked with a move away from the club, as Bayern are reportedly eager to cash in on the 30-year-old midfielder.

Sebastian Rudy and Martinez are the only proper defensive midfielders in the current Bayern squad. It would make sense if Bayern refuse to sell Rudy. The German is a very good cover for Martinez and can also fill in at the right-back position if needed. Moreover, Jupp Heynckes will depart after the DFB Pokal final. The ultimate decision will be in the hands of Niko Kovac, Bayern’s new managers starting next season.
