Jerome Boateng could leave Bayern Munich in the summer

Bayern Munich are reportedly considering the sale of Jerome Boateng in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Jerome Boateng has been one of the most consistent player for Bayern Munich since arriving from Manchester City in 2011.The Bavarians are not known for selling their star players. Nevertheless, the big defender has been linked with a move away from Munich.

Bayern were without some of their key players against Real Madrid on Tuesday, and Boateng was one of them. The German defender is unlikely to play again this season after suffering an injury in the first leg against the Spanish giants.

In an interview last week, Boateng gave a cryptic message about his future at Bayern Munich. He was reluctant to commit to his club for even the foreseeable future. According to SportBild, this has angered the Bayern hierarchy. The German champions are reportedly ready to entertain offers for the defender.

This report also suggests that there were bids for Boateng last summer, but the club couldn’t consider them due to his injury that time. However, they could be convinced to depart with Boateng this summer. SportBild have also provided some insight about the player Bayern are looking to replace Boateng. Bayern Munich have been monitoring Matthijs de Ligt for some time and would turn to the Ajax youngster if Boateng leaves.

The 18-year-old center-back has become one of the most coveted talents in Europe. Bayern have been linked with a move for the Dutchman previously. They will face a tough battle to sign him as several other top European clubs are also interested in him.

Boateng has suffered several injury setbacks in the last few years. After returning from a long term injury last season, he was not a first choice defender under Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian preferred the pairing of Mats Hummels and Javi Martinez in the heart of defense. However, after the arrival of Jupp Heynckes, Boateng became first choice instantly, as Javi Martinez was moved back into midfield. Niklas Sule has been rotated with Hummels and Boateng this season after arriving from Hoffenheim in the summer. The German giant has proven himself capable as a first team center-back.

Bayern Munich will be looking to refresh their squad in the summer, as Niko Kovac is set to take over as manager. Boateng is still in the peak of his career, and it would be a mistake if Bayern try to sell him this summer. The German defender will command a huge fee, but a direct replacement will not be easy to find.
