Bayern Munich: Jupp Heynckes pleased with team’s performance against Sevilla
Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes is pleased with his team’s performance against Sevilla in the Champions League quarter-finals.
The Bavarians were not able to clinch a win on the night as the second leg game of their quarter-final clash ended in a goalless draw. However, Bayern Munich were able to progress to the next round due to their 2-1 win in the first leg.
The German Champions were in total control in the second leg at the Allianz Arena. It was not a vintage performance from Bayern, but Jupp Heynckes was pleased with his players. In his post-match press conference (via BT Sport), Heynckes insisted that keeping a cleansheet in this game was very crucial. He admitted that the team showed fantastic composure to avoid any upset on the night.
"“I’m very happy that we didn’t concede because that’s something I demanded from my team. You have to keep a clean sheet in games like this.“The goalless draw was enough for us to go through today. We didn’t let ourselves get flustered and become nervous.”"
Heynckes also praised Sevilla for the fight they showed against Bayern Munich. There were a few upsets in other quarter-final match-ups, as AS Roma and Liverpool knocked Barcelona and Manchester City out of the competition. The German manager claimed that his team is very motivated to win this competition but they need to respect their opponents.

Bayern Munich leaked a lot of goals at the start of the season. They were able to win the games narrowly but defensively they were all over the place. After his appointment, Heynckes straightaway made certain that the team needs to be solid defensively in order to succeed in Europe. The performance against Sevilla surely highlights the team’s improvement defensively.
However, offensively Bayern will have to be a lot better in order to beat the likes of Liverpool, Roma and Real Madrid. They were not ruthless against Sevilla, like they were against Besiktas in the round of 16. Bayern will have to make the home advantage count in semi-finals.
Bayern were delivering similar performances under Heynckes in 2013 when they won the Champions League. This team is not able to score a lot of goals like that team but defensively they are slowly reaching that level. Heynckes will be hoping that his players become more efficient in the final third in the semi-finals.

The Bavarians will know their semi-final opponent on Friday. There are no easy draws at the moment as all three teams are devastating on their day. Heynckes will have to find a balance between attack and defense before the semi-finals. The treble dream is still alive, but Bayern will have to up their game by a considerable margin to make that dream a reality.
